Millers Take Auto Trip From Mexico To Canada

Mr and Mrs H L Miller with Mrs Swank of Long Beach completed a long auto journey from Tia Juana Mexico along the Pacific Highway to Oregon Washington and into Canada. They visited Victoria Vancouver Seattle and noted major sights including Butcharts Gardens and Parliament buildings. The trip covered towns Mt Shasta City Medford Roseburg Eugene Portland Port Angeles and Vancouver with ferries across Puget Sound and a Seattle panorama of growing hotel developments.

New Compensation Status for Farmers in California

The Industrial Accident Commission announces Assembly Bill No. 997 effective Sept 1 1927. It requires farmers to elect to come under the Workmen's Compensation Act by obtaining insurance or reject the Act by posted notice and filing with the Commission. Noncompliance triggers presumptive acceptance and penalties under the Act. Minimum premiums and payroll-based rates are outlined, including a $15 minimum for small operations and special fruit picking payroll rules.

Shovel and Rail Yard Work to Start Next Week

The contractor for work in the Santa Fe and Union Pacific yards will have two steam shovels in operation next week. Three dinky engines are on the ground along with several dump cars. A number of auto dump trucks will arrive the same week.

Aged Prospector Rescued After Desert Ordeal Near Granite Wells

KF. J. Troutman, about sixty, was found last Wednesday by O A Seaberg of Superior Valley during a prospecting trip. He had walked fifteen miles from his car and was five miles from Granite Wells in extreme heat with little water or provisions. Rescued at Seaberg's ranch, Troutman, an old burro miner, was revived with fruit and hot coffee and is convalescing.

The Barstow jail relocation continues and next week it will reach the final site on the county purchased property west of First street facing the alley near the camp ground opposite the Barstow Garage.

Work has begun to rebuild Barstow yards with track grade raised six feet at the center. Two north side tracks are already raised as damp cars engines and a steam shovel sit on the ground. Tents bunkhouses and a warehouse are up and contractors expect a full crew next week.

Mrs Henderson Passes Away in Salt Lake City

The death of Mrs. A. E. Henderson occurred in Salt Lake City last Friday. Her husband Mr. Henderson and two children, along with Alvin Pocock, left Barstow July 22 by auto for Salt Lake. Mrs. Henderson had felt tired from heat but was in good health previously. Her mother and other relatives live in Salt Lake. A. E. known as Red sold the eating place opposite the grammar school to George Vick before leaving Barstow. The sudden death is regretted by Parstow friends.

Barstow hosts Pikes Peak Ocean to Ocean Association delegates as they praise progress on the route from Las Vegas to Barstow and Barstow’s growth. The tour highlights 1,770 miles of hard surfaced road and 560 miles of dirt, with a $88,000 advertising push planned for the highway.
