Warren Harding’s body returns to Marion for burial after a Washington farewell. The funeral procession and salute by armed guards mark the final chapter of his public life as mourners gather in the capital and at the former president’s home.
Governor Richardson proclaims Friday August 10 1923 a state holiday for all California to observe prayer fasting and mourning in honor of late President Warren G Harding who sacrificed his life in service to the nation the proclamation requests the public to pay respects and marks the day a holiday statewide.
The flag draped casket of Warren G. Harding, the 29th president, arrived in Washington aboard a funeral train nine hours late after crossing the continent. Tens of thousands lined the route from the capital to the White House as the casket was carried in, and the new president and his cabinet stood in silent salute.
Marion Ohio on August 7 will mark the funeral rites for Warren G. Harding with simplicity and severity. The services, likely brief, will be at the vault in Marion Cemetery where the President’s body will be placed temporarily, carried out under Mrs. Harding’s wishes and likely prayer at his father’s home.
Barstow streets saw the first million plated car as Edward Evans Chevrolet drew a high number and Mrs Bred Lobaugh’s new Chevrolet followed. July 1923 registrations rose 15,828 with revenue up $62,608.91, while July 1928 totals reached 68,572 registrations and $242,929.99 in revenue, up from 52,744 registrations and $190,321.08 the prior year.
San Francisco reports that a California firearms law passed by the last legislature becomes effective today. The act allows an enhanced sentence for robbery using a firearm and regulates sale and ownership of firearms under twelve inches in length.
In Washington, 170 people required prostration treatment during the Harding funeral procession from the White House to the Capitol. Spectators along the route and those awaiting entry to the rotunda were among the affected. Officials reported several were hospitalized and one in serious condition.
Six hundred Danes Norwegians and Swedes, all farmers, arrived in New York en route to farms in the West northwest and Canada. Some are said to have brought from $20,000 to $30,000 to purchase land.

A major Yermo fire last Friday destroyed an entire block on the north side of the main street. Fifteen buildings and their contents were consumed, with total damage around 20600, only 4000 insured. The blaze followed an explosion of a coal car filled with again stock near the Connell residence. The Connells were away at the Grand Canyon. Buildings lost included Renner and Bysys home, Yermo garage, Connell office and home, Mobvin rooming house, Knowles pool hall, Flynn residence, and several others. The fire rapidly spread after a fuse line tank exploded, and the block was fully reduced to ashes before relief arrived.
Mrs Lenhart cousin of Mr and Mrs Green is expected to arrive from San Bernardino Saturday evening and will visit with the Greens over Sunday.
Mr and Mrs Melinsky and Dave Sh from Oklahoma arrived in Baccton Wednesday night. Mrs Melinsky is the daughter of Mr and Mrs W W Melton. They are now guests at the Melton home.
New arrivals in Bara on Tuesday were Mr and Mrs Henry Sullivan and daughter from Dayton Ohio. Mr Sullivan is a brother of Mera Lavendy and it had been twenty years since they had seen each other.
The J. Diessl family heads out Friday for a two week fishing outing into old Monico. Mr Diessl, division storekeeper for the Sama Fe, was last seen walking down the street with his fishing pole and a polished Studebaker ready for the trip.
Frank A. Bilis general yardmaster for the Santa Fe received a Chamber of Commerce invitation to attend the Comeback Club celebration in Kearney Nebraska from September 11 to 14 inclusive. Mr Tisits is a Nebraska native who spent his boyhood days near Kenrey. Mr Bills was formerly yard master in the Barstow yards.
Mr and Mrs G B Rouch of Rochester Indiana arrived in Barstow en route to San Diego to settle there visiting brother Frank Rouch. They described the desert crossing as smooth except for a 50 mile rough road around Ludlow. Next summer the Barstow Needles highway will be improved by state maintenance.
E West arrived from Salt Lake and becomes proprietor, taking over the cafe from Mr and Mrs Warren who had only managed it for a couple of weeks.
Local residents invited to a Tuesday meeting at 2 PM in the grammar school auditorium to decide whether to close or keep open the west end crossings of freight and passenger tracks and discuss safer crossing measures. About 600 cars daily cross the freight tracks and about 400 cross the passenger crossing at the west end.
Mrs Walter Mudgett entertained the Bridge Club Monday evening at her apartments in Dillingham Heights. Mrs L E Tiernan substituted for Mrs L J Henderson and held the high score. Unique bookends were awarded. Refreshments of salad with nut bread sandwiches and ice tea were enjoyed.
A goodly number of children attended last Sunday’s Sunday school at 9 45 and more are expected this coming Sunday. Grover led a formal service at the close of church school on the topic Religious and Modern Secular Literature. Another speaker will address the morning session briefly after Sunday school.
Local notes recount Tuesday evening at a bear roast with Charey Warren Mae Wren and Mrs Dobbs. Thursday gatherings include Mrs B Stafford Miss Agnes Houck and family visiting Vermy with Ahern kin. Master Dodge Jr. suffers a fractured arm. Harry Dobbs theatrically encounters a wild cat and then a Bob Cat. townsfolk marvel at his marksmanship.
A 22 000 appropriation will finance a dormitory and recreation hall in Yesup for Union Pacific railway employees. The building sits about 125 feet west of the new depot. UP is also erecting 32 new operator houses along the line and may fund more cottages at Yermo after a recent fire reduced housing.
Fire crews responded Monday afternoon to a blaze along the Santa Fe fence behind the Bauern residence. The fire consumed about 23 feet of fencing before being extinguished, with no injuries reported.
W. W. Warren won the bid to drive the Hinkley bus for Barstow Union High School this fall. He is currently painting and varnishing the interior of the high school.
City Meat Market presided by Pendleton and jaz enby adds a vegetable counter and milk to its stock. Alongside fresh and smoked meats the shop now offers vegetables butter eggs bread and fresh fruits, aiming to meet rising tourist trade and public demand.
Margaret and Clyde Meikle with Archie Meikle and guest Elsie Riche spent Sunday evening at the beach near Long Beach. The Weikie children may visit their father this week before returning to the beach for the rest of the summer.
Mrs. Claud Green received a telegram announcing the death of her uncle P. F. Fossville in Rev: and gies, Missouri. The notice says he died at the Green home in Rarstow, age last April. The report appears in the family circulars and reflects local obituary notices.
