The Santa Fe railroad entertained a full Reading Room audience Monday evening with a traveling ladies quartet, pianoist, and elocutionist. All vocal, literary, and instrumental numbers drew applause, as Barstow benefits from free performances weekly through the winter and hoped to continue into summer.
The North Side residents held a dancing party in Fletcher hall last Friday night. Guests enjoyed old round dances, a midnight luncheon, and continued dancing with music by Charley Brass James Honey Mrs E L Standfield and Jack Warner.
Superior Valley reports rapid growth with 25 acres cleared and new plantings. D K Cruts advances a 108 foot well project as Williams gains 80 acres cleared on the east side with assistance from Malgon and Cooley. Local postmistress visited and builders Eckley McJohnson plan new houses as Barstow merchants anticipate valley growth and regional development. Time will show the results.
Under Joe O Hara the team has prepared the new ball diamond near the stock yards for Sundays afternoon game at 2 50. The home lineup announced includes Redfield Carroll O Hara Lobaugh Bowman Desney Warnick Connelly Kitlen with Redfield and Carroll as battery.
The San Bernardino visitors beat the local team 10 to 9 in a girls game while the men’s contest ended 34 to 31 with San Bernardino leading. A banquet at Harvey House honored the visitors with a multi course menu and local guests in attendance.
A. P. Loso seen in a Buick with demonstrators touring the desert roads. Carey Hansen, Barbar Hull, and Emily Baltz visit San Bernardino and Los Angeles while filing for divorce. Local staff changes include Edna Poole and Florene Rogge. Hettie Hughes departs for Los Angeles. Visitors from Barstow travel to Chicago. notable guests include J. K. Mitchell and other executives touring the area.
Daggett and Barstow residents unite to form the Mojave River Chamber of Commerce at I. J. Henderson’s Barstow store. Lt. Henderson named temporary chair with J. Henderson as president, Dix Van Dyke as vice president, and Lloyd Nieman as secretary. Eleven directors named from Daggett Barstow Yerma Superior Valley and others. Initiation fee 50 cents. Next meeting set for May 3 1917 inviting all interested parties.
Town topics cover a ladies aid tea at Mrs. Lubin Hendersons with strong attendance and funds added. Lumber hauling to Wilkins addition for a bungalow home of the Jim Connor family. High school orchestra gains six members as Tony Dorrance leaves for navy. Local mining, road exams, swimming at Daggett hole, and Barstow visitors noted. High school dedication in Victorville praised. teachers and students listed.
About 210 navy recruits halted in Barstow for an hour Monday evening, receiving a hearty welcome from townspeople. The group, led by one officer, had been recruited in the east and sent to San Diego, then ordered to San Francisco to join the bay city. They appeared mainly in their teens and carried high spirits about seeing life at sea.
ND Darling ton chairman of the state highway commission states the type of road cannot yet be announced. Engineers are in the field conducting preliminary surveys and work will begin once deeds are filed. The road is among eight new additions to the original system and will be pursued rapidly to protect citizens' interests.
Mrs. Donald Henderson, manager of the local telephone station, reports rising receipts month by month and says last month’s tolls were the largest since opening in Barstow. She cites growing preference for rapid, reliable telephone service over slower letter mail amid competitive times. Geo F Duncan of Kramer recently in town for several days left yesterday for Jean Nevada.
