Entertainers Inspire Harper Lake Valley Event in Hinkley

The American Legion Shell Shocker's orchestra from Long Beach entertained residents of Harper Lake Valley and Hinkley with lively music and comedy. Guests included James F. Collins, ranch developer, and local figures from Long Beach and Pasadena. By evening, dancing filled the auditorium and classroom as chicken sandwiches and coffee were served. Road improvements and farming expansion projects are advancing with substantial investment this year.

Auto Kills Horse In collision on Hinkley road

A bay horse owned by O N Plum of Hinkley collided with a Buick driven by Lee Redfield on the Hinkley road before the Riley ranch. Ward and Thompson, Santa Fe switchmen, were in the Buick. Ward sustained chest injuries, Redfield nose scrapes, Thompson uninjured. the horse died, car damaged, four fence posts knocked down. Ward likely to be sent to Santa Fe hospital.

Clean-up Day Ordered in Barstow for Saturday

Deputy county health officer Dr. B. C. Anderson proclaimed a Barstow clean-up day for Saturday April 14 with wagons collecting garbage and tin cans Saturday afternoon. Residents should place rubbish on the sidewalk by Saturday noon at no charge to ensure quick loading.

Elks Delegation Visits Barstow Urge Local Printing

Eddie Calder newly elected exalted ruler of San Bernardino Elks Lodge along with J. H. Barnum and Wm J. Walsh of Barnum & Flagg Co. visited Barstow early this week. They solicit paper orders but urge Barstow merchants to place printing orders with their local Barstow paper.

Union Pacific Improves Grounds at Yermo

J P Carey superintendent of Union Pacific reports progress on the Yermo round house addition with ten new cement stalls. A new park is started on the west side of the depot to enhance Union Pacific property and the town of Yermo.

High School Notes on Plays and Annual Printing

The student body selects participants for three one act plays this year with new casts for each. Only students meeting standards will take part, and the player will be chosen by month end. The high school annual will print in Los Angeles, funded by local merchants and printing firms. The freshman class hosts a Friday night event for the student body with excitement for a good time.

Bridge Party Honors Mrs Ed Faulkener in Redondo

A Thursday afternoon bridge party honored guest Mrs Ed Faulkener of Redondo. The Faulkener family formerly lived in Barstow. Mrs Tiernan won high score and Mrs Paul Martin took second. A dainty luncheon was served by the hostess.

Luella Barry leaves for two weeks vacation in Los Angeles Catalina with Grace Brim and Ann Brim who resign from Harvey service. Early plans to return to Barstow. Brim sisters depart popularity noted. Grace Brim intends to teach in Emporia Kansas next season.

The weekly Bridge club met at Mrs. C. C. McIntyre home. First score went to Mrs. Joe Rankin and second to Mrs. T. O. Carter. Cookies and punch followed games. Out of town guests included Mrs. Bartram of Colorado Mrs. Joe McCue of Daggett and Mrs. Cales of Los Angeles.

Salvation Army Drive and Antler's Club Dance

The Salvation Army Drive runs April 23 to April 28 aiming to raise $6,000 in this county. Barstow quota is $360 with support from the Elks and nearly every local organization. Railways will aid Barstow, and a “hard times” fundraiser is planned for April 28 in the auditorium.
