A Barstow area report notes fossilized camels and other bones shipped to New York, urges preserving a Barstow Park, warns against large desert withdrawals, mentions 6 million dollar state park bonds, and notes Bentonite clay mining near Daggett as growth drivers.
EB. L. Seymour of Hinkley has completed a half mile of cement pipe and plants fourteen additional acres to alfalfa. C. G. Phillips adds 300 feet of cement pipe and ten more acres. The Hinkley district now harbors six to seven hundred acres of alfalfa with yearly expansion.
Rev. Isaac McRae announces a sunrise Easter service on the hill behind the Grammar School at 5 20 AM with special music and Henry Van Dyke’s God of the Open Air read. The Sunday School Easter program is at 10 00 AM, with sermons at 11 00 AM and 7 30 PM and Easter anthems by the choir.
The Free Methodist Mission will hold Easter services with a sermon titled Christ is risen indeed at 11:00 A M. A Sunday school program is planned for 7:30 and another Sunday school session at 10 A M. Mrs Jensen, a returned missionary from South Africa, will share experiences from the Mission School there. Everyone is welcome.
At the Fairview Schoolhouse on Friday evening the Newberry Woman's Club heard Mrs. D. G. Stephens and Mrs. C. M. Weyman, Santa Monica leaders, discuss The Work of the Woman's Club and Cooperation and Organization in Women Clubs. Afterward a decorated table offered refreshments.
About seventy residents gathered for a Hodge Hinkley Harper Lake and Hodge union Sunday School at the Hodge school house. Perry the desert missionary spoke then attendees shared a feast and hoped for another gathering soon.
Barstow post office receipts rose about ten percent in March 1928 versus March 1927 and nearly eleven percent for the quarter ending March 1928 compared with the same period in 1927. The first three months of 1927 totaled $2095.61, while 1928 reached $2321.46.
Classified item shows a Corona portable typewriter offered almost new for 20 dollars cash at the Freight office via Brown cashier. Also German police pedigreed pups for sale with males 15 dollars and females 10 dollars, with H. R. Brown at the Freight office noted for both listings.
Chas Wallace owner of the Forum Theatre left Barstow for Los Angeles by Bauer Slaton airplane with Lent Jonas piloting. Dozens of local residents, visitors, and hotel guests are listed across Barstow and nearby towns, with several trips and new constructions noted including a 1928 Chevrolet roadster purchase and bridge club activities.
Business and property owners gathered at the Barstow Chamber of Commerce to choose where a viaduct should cross the railroad tracks. Officials favored a First Street crossing, while some east-end owners preferred Fifth Street. The cost to route from Third to Seventh would exceed $100,000 versus the highway and railroad surveyors plan. A second meeting postponed to inspect crossings and finalize the preferred site showed no opposition to First Street.
J. W. Walker is promoted to Assistant General Manager and C. G. Minhr moves from Needles to Fresno as superintendent of the Valley Division. G. W. Simpson becomes superintendent of the Valley Division, succeeding Mrr. Fluhr at Needles. The Arizona Division gains a new superintendent, welcomed by railroad men. Christie, former Arizona Division superintendent now in San Francisco, was a beloved figure known for visiting many business houses on each trip.
A caravan of about twenty cars carries Bakersfield high school students from chemistry and geology classes to Barstow. Professor Vivian from a neighboring high school joined the group at the California Inn Camp after a Death Valley excursion via Mojave, returning to Barstow.
A caravan of twenty autos from Glendale carrying Boy Scouts and high school students traveled to Death Valley, replenished near Barstow, rested, and continued to a camp near Victorville. They returned via Barstow and Mojave routes, appreciating the different travel paths.
A Tuesday night head on collision occurred at the Hinkley road corner north of Mitchell Garage. Occupants were from the Hinkley district, likely including Mr. Houck in one car and the Edwards’ boy and sister in the other. Dr Chapin arrived shortly after to tend to minor injuries.
Local and tourist interest rises as T G Nicklin and Scotty Thursby search Fossel Beds north of Barstow for a possible route. Fossel Beds and Petrified Forests draw visitors from nearby districts. A camel skeleton found this week by Smithsonian Institute workers was shipped east.
The Western Tale and Magnicite Company bought the Martin Minerals property three miles east of Barstow near the Nebo siding. B. E. Eichholtz leads six men producing material for shipment to Los Angeles.
George and John Starnacle begin work at the east end of Main street to build cement cabins and a service station. They will mold a thousand cement blocks on the ground for the structures along the highway north and south of it, adjoining L. B. Tiernan’s 40 acres to the east.
W H Sides completed three additional cabins at the California Inn Camp between Fifth and Sixth streets on Main, bringing the total to fifteen. The grounds are improved with trees and tourism draws travelers to Barstow to stay overnight.
Poles for extending the Southern Sierras Power Company line from Barstow to Daggett and Yermo arrived this week. The company will spend thousands to boost farming and mining areas east of Barstow, with the line planned to Culico mining district. Zenda Mining Company, already operating, is expected to be the first to use the electric service.
Mr and Mrs Bauer plan a new Rose Inn on East Main Street near Seventh.Builder Chas Brass oversees work on a 50 by 76 foot structure with rock foundation and shingle sides. Interior includes maple floor a large dining room for dances and a club meeting room.
Evenson has opened a new lumber yard on First street next to his warehouse. Cement runners were installed this week by Curt De Wolf to support lumber stacking. A shed is planned over the runners and a surrounding fence will enclose the yard.
Leon P. Whitney eyes Barstow area as ground is leveled at the Bear Valley road and Main Street corner for a new electric shop. Whitney, longtime Barstow employee with many friends, will lead the venture.
A few thousand dollars are spent on Willett's Camp Ground at the south end of First street. A swimming pool, serving as a water reservoir, nears completion to supply trees planted on the property. Shower baths, a dance floor, and a pumping plant are in place with ample water supply.
Mr and Mrs M Ochea recently moved into their new home on the south end of Second street after completion a few months ago. They plan to add more trees and flowers while awaiting the completion of a water company tank installation.
Mrs Henneforth visited Barstow Sunday with her mother and were guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Ralph Haan. The party traveled in their auto with Mr and Mrs George Desking and Mrs Haan as far as San Bernardino. The Hennephants formerly lived at the Harvey House and now reside in Los Angeles.
