Gold rush west of Barstow draws miners and crowds

Mining men report a major new strike by Ed and John Herkelrath in the Kramer hills west of Barstow. The find, 31 miles west of Barstow near Jim Grey siding, has drawn thousands to the area as ore values run from 75 cents to 2.50 a pan and leases near the property exchange for high sums.

Rich ore values found by miners in new district

Miner C J Whitlock describes multiple pay veins at shallow depths with ore values from 75 cents to 10 dollars per pan and assay results up to 300 dollars per ton on second and third veins. Porter and Platt lease Whitlock ground, while Johnson and Walters lead the rival camp with three small iron buildings nearby.

A 360 acre tract adjoining the Ed and John Herkelrath discovery shaft, long staked, is claimed by Mrs. Steven S. Kelly of San Bernardino as the owner. Purchased from the state years ago, she asserts full legal rights to minerals. The contention may affect prospectors who located claims believing them valuable.

Barstow to Have Another Hotel

Barstow plans a twenty five room hotel on the corner of the Highway and Second Street by Mr and Mrs H L Miller. The project, sped by National Old Trails growth and the cut off improvements to Los Angeles and Salt Lake, will sit opposite the Hotel Melrose and operate with it. Ground floor rooms with lobby, hot and cold water, permanent rooms for about half, and attractive landscaping are planned with stucco finish.

Sunrise Easter Service on Hill Deserts Gathering

A sunrise service will be held on the hill south of the grammar school at 5 27 as the sun rises over the east. Whitney's band will play and community singing plus instrumental and vocal music will fill the gathering. Van Dyke's poem God of the Open Air will be read and an Easter address given. Attendance has grown since it began four years ago and organizers urge a large turnout on this eastern morning to make it the largest and best meeting yet.

Barber Found Dead After Prolonged Alcohol Abuse

Clyde FE Richardson a Barstow barber and former Postal Telegraph manager was found dead after a nine day absence. Acute alcoholism cited by Deputy Coroner Emmett Waters. Bootleg liquor and 23 pint bottles found at the scene. Richardson, 41, lived with his mother Mrs Richardson and was born in Illinois July 23, 1885. The Western Pacific Oil Company reports a new drill near Yermo aiming for a shallow oil strike, following two prior wells in the district.
