A large deputation protests frontage tax while residents object to paying all from the general rate. The council considers a change of route through Allandale and explores tendering options for future projects.
A Barrie council meeting drew a large deputation against the frontage tax plan for a permanent town highway linking with provincial routes. Alderman Byrne moved to take no action on the remaining tender, delaying action and possibly sending the issue to a January vote. The meeting heard strong objections from business leaders and church representatives to the frontage tax, concerns about maintenance, noise, and property depreciation, while one small group supported the frontage tax.
Albert Richmond 22 born in Yorkshire pleaded guilty to stealing from Y M C A Allandale room mates. Magistrate Jeffs imposed one year, with restitution arranged after Constable Rayner recovered items including two razors shirts a $45 suit a hat an overcoat and a mouth organ. Richmond had prior appearance and has lived in Barrie and Innisfil worked as a farm hand.
Chief King investigates a Tuesday night burglary at 94 Sanford Street where a desk was broken open and $110 in bills stolen. Mr and Mrs Hurst slept through the break in. the front door was unlocked and only money was taken leaving papers scattered.
The Barrie fair weathered rain on Tuesday with a crowd and $763.35 gate receipts, down from last year. Wednesday’s sunny finale drew $779, higher than 1921, while midways suffered from cancellations. Exhibits showed strong livestock and poultry displays, with a lively main hall of flowers, crafts, and refreshments drawing steady patronage.
Magistrate Jeffs condemned a spree of thefts by Thomas Eyre of Collingwood for burglarizing cottages at Oakview Wasaga Beach and bigamy. Eyre received 3 year burglary and 2 year bigamy sentences to run concurrently after a six month Inland Revenue sentence.
Principal Girdwood reports Barrie Collegiate Institute now has 370 students, up 120 in two years. The Upper School grew 300 percent in three years to 52 students from 13 in 1919, while First Form holds 164 in year one. An inter-collegiate meet is set for Oct. 7 in Barrie with Lindsay Orillia Midland as rivals for the Tudhope Cup.
The Hon. W. L. Mackenzie King stayed in Barrie from Friday night to Saturday noon visiting his sister Mrs. H. M. Lay. Local Liberals and citizens called on the Premier including Mayor Little and J. D. Wisdom. He then went to Sharon to address the York Historical Society.
Alliston bowlers swept three prizes at a district tournament held Friday in Alliston. Barrie players and guests from Creemore Aurora Tottenham and Bolton failed to win any prizes. Team members included D. J. Reburn A. J. Sarjeant T. T. Young J. D. Milne and others.
Alderman Byrne accuses an engineer of a share in Warren Bituminous Paving Co. and uses this as grounds to reject the tender. He refuses to provide council members with further information.
At a Monday council meeting Alderman Byrne alleged James Proctor and Redfern of Toronto were linked to Warren Bituminous Paving Company, prompting a formal denial from W B Redfern. The council debated tender acceptance with Warren’s bid the lowest, while others were returned for review.
Mrs Bes sie Eyre of Collingwood pleaded guilty to bigamy after two marriages 1919 and 1921 to men in Collingwood. Magistrate Jeffs sentenced six months noting youth and aid to Crown in Wasaga Beach burglaries. Eyre feared county jail. asked to correspond with Mr Eyre.
James of Toronto rejects an Alderman Byrne claim linking him or his firm to The Warren Bituminous Paving Company of Ontario Limited. He calls the assertion groundless, demands proof if repeated, and threatens legal action for defamation.
The Warren Bituminous Paving Company via W H Legge denies a council member's claim that engineer E A James is financially connected to the firm. The company insists the assertion is false and offers to prove the misstatement to Barrie officials.
