Death of Andrew Nichols at Minesing on Mill Road

Andrew Nichols a farmer near Barrie died October 22 at age six years after a period of poor health. Funeral held from the family home on Wednesday October 24 at the Union church in Minesing. He leaves a widow and one daughter.

Royal Victoria Hospital Board Re-Elected Asks For Rate Review

The Royal Victoria Hospital held its annual meeting with 20 directors and officials present. The board reported maintenance costs and extraordinary expenditures topping 5500 dollars, including fuel salaries and medical appliances. They noted a tubercular clinic start and thanked the Auxiliary Sewing Club and staff. Discussion traced a 1900 fuel bill rise to coal quality and two water jackets. The board warned of possible rate hikes if costs rise further and mentioned plans to consider a nurses home drive.

Moral Standard Lower Since War in Barrie Talk

Dr Sarah Detweiller of Kitchener spoke at the Barrie Public Library on social service lines saying moral standards have fallen since the war and automobiles menace youth. She urged Canada adopt a constructive education program to raise morals and shield the young from dangers, noting over 60 000 girls in the United States last year.

Former Barrieite elected Saskatchewan M P P Milestone

Birthall Lewis, formerly of Barrie, won the Milestone riding bye election on October 20 to join the Saskatchewan Legislature. He defeated Progressive candidate J W Patterson by about 500 votes after the death of Liberal M P P Bernard Larsen. Lewis is the son of the late David Lewis of Barrie.

Boys Plan Town Council Election At Friday Meeting

New at Stroud Barn Fire Devastates Farm Structure

Fire at H H New Stroud farm destroyed a 40 by 75 foot barn and adjacent pig pen with hay and grain, incurring losses likely over 3000 dollars. Some livestock perished while horses and cattle were in fields. Cause unknown, no witnesses. Robertson farm linked, Fred Robertson’s nearby buildings narrowly saved.

Reduction Granted to Opera House and Wice in Barrie Court

At the Barrie Court of Revision Friday two appeals were granted. Grand Opera House received a 1250 reduction on property and business, due to back street location. Frank Wice was granted income exemption up to 2000 dollars as sole family supporter. Four other appeals were disallowed.

Citizens Honour Ball Champions

A Banquet at Wairs Restaurant honored Barrie pennant winners of the South Simcoe League after a 1923 baseball season. About 150 guests, including league officers and visiting clubs, heard speeches, songs, and tributes to manager Milne and the team.
