A real estate case at Spring Assize hears M. D. Cubitt-Nichols claim for 1200 dollars commission against Wm. H. Edgerton over a farm sale to A. W. Fielder of Coboconk for 18700. Edgerton contends Cubitt-Nichols was late. farm ultimately sold for 20000 to another buyer.
Barrie experienced a rapid temperature swing last week from 22 below zero on Thursday to 80 above on Saturday. Sunday and Monday brought warm banana belt air, Tuesday cooled, and by Sunday evening thunder and lightning occurred. By Wednesday morning six inches of snow were reported with a foot by night as crystals began to melt.
Street paving in Lindsay Newmarket and St Marys shows varied approaches and costs. Newmarket shifted to permanent roadmaking after early failures with a clay bottom and later laid a stone base with crushed stone and bithulithic surface. Lindsay reports 16 miles paved mostly in 1915 16 with 5 6 miles in recent years using Portland cement base and asphalt wearing surface at $2 to $2 90 per square yard with debentures financing and shared costs between town and property owners.
Barrie council refused a 1 000 grant toward a community nurse salary while facing an 80 000 overdraft and debates on funding Muskoka hospital. Aldermen debated advancing up to 3 800 to cover the deficit, but the finance committee recommended no action.

Barrie reports total debenture indebtedness of 449461.16 dollars, only 26072.84 higher than 1916 despite war and high loan rates. Loans to manufactories and water and light are non taxable and liquidated by annual payments. Two schools add 142479.30 to debt, yet net debenture debt is 116406.46 less than end of 1916. Debentures expire or are paid through 1928 29 with annual liquidations totaling 105017.18 over seven years. Interest rates reach 3 3 and 4 percent.
The council heard James Proctor & Redfern’s eight section paving estimate for two miles 213 feet of Barrie streets at a total $218 400. The plan proposes concrete base with bituminous top and sectional pricing to secure best value with a 5 percent debenture rate for twenty years.
