Allied forces reach the Cambrai suburbs as German lines buckle on all fronts. British and French units advance along the Hindenburg Line with depth to two miles north of St. Quentin and progress toward the Chemin des Dames front.
London dispatch reports Field Marshal Haig’s forces breaking the Hindenburg line along eight miles with two miles maximum depth north of St. Quentin. British and French advances in Flanders reach average five miles depth, eight miles at maximum, threatening Roulers and enemy communications in Belgium and the coast. French push north of the Aisne pressures the canal Oise-Aisne as they move toward the Chemin des Dames while the enemy retreats behind the Ailette.
British and American forces reported reverses on the front near Bellicourt and Le Catelet with German counterattacks. Haig announced Allied troops reached St Quentin area and 40 guns captured, while the north of Cambrai saw British entry into the northern suburbs. Southwest Le Catelet saw renewed pressure near Villers-Guinlain and Bony as Dowal area withdrawals occurred.
Paris Sept 30 French resumed their daybreak actions in Champagne with no infantry last night. German counterattacks south of St Quentin in the Urvillers region failed, hill 88 remained in French control, heavy artillery fights occurred between the Allette and nearby sectors. Amsterdam Sept 30 A proposal to invite presidents of belligerent and neutral parliaments to peace talks was introduced in the Austrian Parliament by Herr Neumann to discuss a foundation for peace.
Havre dispatch reports Belgian and British forces defeating Germany in heavy fighting on the Flanders ridge and Measines Wytechaete positions. The Measines Wytechte ridge reportedly occupied as Germans retreat from Lys approaches. Emperor Charles of Austria pledges loyalty amid telegraph dispatches quoted by conservative press.
New York on September 30 reports demands by longshoremen for an eight hour day and a wage of one dollar per hour, with two dollars hourly for overtime. The request was presented to the national bar adjustment committee, tied to overseas operations from Boston to Norfolk.
The funeral of Supply Sergeant Robert Brown who died at Cam Devens was held Sunday at his mother Mrs John Brown's home 15 Buxnott Street Barre. Rev F L Guild officiated with Rev D B Reardon assisting. Pallbearers included John Brown Jr William Brown and G A Brown. Attending from Windsor were G N Tilden Mr Claflin and Mr Kelly representing the Odd Fellows. Graveside rites at Hope Cemetery used Odd Fellows and Masons rituals. Out of town guest Mildred Mix of Windsor, Brown's fiancée, attended the services.
The funeral for Seaman James McIntosh, son of Mrs Elizabeth Taylor of Elmwood Avenue, who died at the Brooklyn spa yard, was conducted at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday at 2 30 PM with Rev Edgar Crossland officiating. Members of the local Eagles aerie and Clan Gordon attended, bearing for the deceased. Interment followed in Elmwood cemetery family lot.
Funeral services for Mrs. George J. Barber were held at 2 PM at 55 Merchant Street with Rev. B J Lae ich of First Baptist officiating. Interment followed in Maplewood Cemetery. Attending from out of town were Mr and Mrs William Hunt and daughter Eleanor of South Royalton and Royal Moxley of Hardwick.
Giuseppe Manrini, a Barre resident for five years and native of Cassio Italy, died at City Hospital at 9 15 this morning after a week with grip. He was born March 2 1890 and leaves a seriously ill wife of four months at 1918 Addison piaen. Survived by his wife, his mother in Italy, a recently notified deceased brother who served in the Italian army, and two sisters in Italy. Interment Friday at Hope Cemetery, funeral Thursday afternoon.
Edward Lavi Barré, a granite cutter, died at his home near Williamstown in the early hours from complications of grip and Spanish flu. He was about 37, survived by his wife and son Kenneth, with three sisters and one brother. Funeral arrangements to be announced.
Miss Marion Bombard daughter of Mr and Mrs George E Bombard died at 10 30 o clock in Montpelier She was born in Milton January 20 1804 and had lived in Montpelier five years She leaves five sisters Therona Laura Phylisa Harriet and Kunics all of whom reside nearby The obituary notes the family and residence details from the local diathe records.
The Barre Board of Trade appeals to women in Barre and nearby towns to volunteer as nurses during a severe shortage. Hayward Leclair, 62, found dead on his bed in his second floor room at the A Tomasi building on Merchant street. A neighboring resident reported not hearing usual activity and discovered the body. Police indicate death likely occurred Saturday afternoon with a dinner prepared nearby. Relatives include Frank Leclair and brothers George William Jed Leclair of Borte. Body to be moved to Essex Junction for services and interment on Tuesday morning via Central Vermont railroad.
Arthur Dalliere died after a short illness following an attack of grip. He was moved from Brare to St Johnsbury Hospital yesterday forenoon after being unable to work for a week. Dalliere, his wife Mrs. Dalliere, and others were noted in a city obituary filed from St Johnsbury.
Three children who survive him arrived in the city from St Johnsbury last February and have since lived on Pee Avenue. He was foreman at Blois Pants Plant in town and born about 35 years ago in Canada. He had longtime residence in St Johnsbury before moving here months ago. During his time, he formed many business and social connections that mourn his death. Funeral plans indicate a service in Johnsbury on Wednesday.
Basilio Barquin of Central Granite Co died at his home at 25 Vine Street Saturday night at 10 o'clock after a pneumonia illness. He leaves a wife and three children Angus, Jane, and Paulo, with brothers Joaquin and Ballantini Barquin and sister Amelia in Spain. Born in Santander, Spain, 37 years ago, he came to Barre 19 years ago, helped form Central Granite Co, and was a lead figure in Barre's Spanish colony. Funeral at St. Montcal's church Tuesday morning, Rev. McKenna officiating, burial in Catholic cemetery on Beckley Street.
The body of Private Clement Pinardi of Camp Devens arrived in Barre on Sunday morning after death at the camp Friday following a brief illness. Services will be held at 4 p.m. at Charles Marches home 62 Railroad Street and burial will follow in the Catholic cemetery. The deceased, born in Italy, had lived in Barre eight years and worked as a granite cutter. His wife died a year ago and a daughter in Barre is his sole American survivor.
Armando Crispi, a native of Spain and resident of 26 Berlin Street, Barre, died in City Hospital Sunday morning after a three day illness described as grip. He aged around 24 and had lived in Barre five years, working three as a driver for Aurelio Villa. He leaves his mother in Spain. Funeral plans expect burial at Hope Cemetery Tuesday afternoon.
The Washington draft lottery opened with President Wilson drawing the first capture for the 13,000,000 men registered. A long list followed naming winners by number, with many entries including Charles M. Bradford, Georgie L. Archer, Patrick Burke, and numerous others across Barre, Montpelier, Websterville, Waterbury, and surrounding Vermont towns.
Miss Lillian Relation, 16, daughter of Mrs. Josephine Relation of 0 Charge Street, died in the forenoon after several days of illness that began with a severe cold and developed pneumonia. Born in Barre in 10%, she leaves brothers and sisters. An obituary also notes the death of Chief M Ia Chundior of 10 Dark Street and Cadet Chandler, a Norwich University student and Spaulding high school graduate, both linked to the same illness.
Mrs Eliza Grast wife of Antonio Grast of 24 Blackwall Street died at 12 10 this morning after a week of illness with pneumonia and grip. She leaves husband and two daughters Mary and Nella Grast. A native of Italy she had lived in Barre eight years. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
Edward Chandler son of Dr and Mrs ML Changier dies at Northfield after illness. The brief notice records the death of a local resident named Edward Chandler as reported by family sources. Further details or dates are not provided in the fragment.
Henry DeLellis of Amsterdam New York died during a visit to Barre. He was born in Italy and had come to the United States four years earlier from Mir bello Italy.
