U S Submersible went down in 35 feet of water in the outer harbor at San Pedro California. Most officers and crew got ashore safely before R 6 was connected to other subs. A hasty cable cut saved nearby vessels from being dragged to the bottom. The force, meantime, kept commerce and traffic from being disrupted.
San Pedro Cal Sept 27 three men believed dead after United States submarine Roti sank in outer harbor following unexplained accident. Lieutenant J R Chambers reported last to escape and aid others. Divers search, hawsers to recover lifeboats, airtight compartment may have saved some. Meanwhile trade with Europe rose in August while US South America trade remained near flat.
Police believed the Worcester jail escapee James Monahan, linked to three auto thieves, was captured in Boston's South End. Monahan, sentenced to eight to ten years, was being transported with 12 prisoners when he allegedly slipped free, prompting pursuit.

Six cars of a Boston and Maine passenger train from Rockport to Boston derailed near the General Electric works in West Lynn. No injuries reported though passengers were shaken. The derailment occurred as a coupling pin failed after the engine dragged the sleepers for about 200 yards in the West Lynn yards during ballast work.

Bellows Falls Sept 27 Myers head of International Paper company mill Here says about 20 former employes have signified willingness to return to work at the proposed wage set by the wage conference board and to renounce their union affiliations. About five are at work. once others are ready the mill will attempt to operate at least one paper machine. About 700 International workers have been on strike since last week. this marks the first move toward open shop return. Local union officials deny a widespread movement to accept the International union and call rumors false about a paper circulated showing 125 had not returned to work.
A special election in the sixth district to choose a successor to Cerise Wilfred W. Lakin took place in Hamilton and Wenham. Andrew led in Hamilton with 75 votes to Tettingell 30 and in Wenham 74 for Andrew versus Pettingell 18. A fire at three in the morning damaged Marble Block on Main Street Biddeford causing about 100 dollars in loss. The building housed Lewis Poleckewieh and sons on the ground floor with Charles Benoit and Pierre Ledoux nearby. The Clothier Company stock in Staples block adjacent also suffered smoke damage. Insurance partly covers the losses.
