British and French forces drive forward after Combles with renewed offensive momentum. German positions around Chaulnes pressured as the Allied advance intensifies with strong artillery and infantry activity in the continuing push.
Allied forces on the Somme report a new French push capturing a strongly fortified wood south of the Somme near Chaulnes. British troops also seize Combles and Thiepval while continuing to push eastward toward key objectives. French and British actions widen the front as German resistance stiffens in parts of Macedonia and Dobrudja.

An official statement says Coambles is fully in Anglo French hands and French advances northward along the Frogienurt and Kethune road reached a diurnal grooms. Sept 27 notices report Marion Owens eight year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Owens of Fair Haven died after a week's illness with infantile paralysis. The child leaves parents and one brother. The burial was at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. In Bellows Falls health officials confirm Gwen Dolyn Clough two and a half, daughter of Mr and Mrs William Clough of Saxtons River, died Saturday from infantile paralysis. The family moved to Saxtons River last Wednesday from Lisbon, marking the first northern Vermont death from the disease.
Judson Reynolds prominent citizen of Alburg died suddenly yesterday while crossing by boat from Alburg to Rous Point. He was 61, believed to have heart trouble. A physician arrived at Rouses Point but Reynolds was dead on arrival. He leaves a wife nine children and a sister. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm in Center Cemetery with religious rites.
Sept 27 Middlebury reports the First Vermont regiment recruiting effort being scaled back after July 25. The First Vermont Cavalry members return to Fort Ethan Allen awaiting muster out in a few days. Recruits Lt. R. Knowlton and Sgt. W. A. Uphats along with Corp. J. Tanghim and Private J. Marker were accepted, adding four new men to service.
A devastating blaze swept Hechinens Home for Children and Aged in Quebec on September 27, with 200 inmates rescued as the building burned. Firefighters battled the flames amid high winds, saving residents and evacuating others to safety. Local authorities report no fatalities and ongoing investigations into the cause.
Newport on September 27 witnessed a blaze starting in H. B. Stewart’s Beebe barn used as a livery stable by F. B. W. Wheeler. The fire spread to a small garage housing two autos and then to the Drew building, a three story tenement, damaging upper floors and affecting nearby stores. Loss includes horses, hay, grain, and vehicles. Fire origin unknown. Newport and West Derby fire departments fought the flames.
Marshfield gives tribute to Charles BE Shepard, longtime resident and Civil War veteran. A renowned choir leader and singer, he died at about 6:50 this morning after months of declining brain health. He and his wife Ma. Shepard celebrated their 18th anniversary last April. he leaves two children, B. M. Shepard of Montpelier and Mrs. G B. Tine of the Maine. Services set for Friday at his late home with no flowers.
Complete returns from yesterday's primaries show Frederick W. Mansfield defeating former Adjt. Gen. Charles H. Cole by 1874 votes to secure the Democratic nomination for governor. Alonzo B. Cook is renominated for state auditor, prevailing over Joseph P. Brown by 1188 votes.
In probate court at Montpelier the will of Annabelli MacDonald of Thurre was presented for probate. Various appointments were made including Don Dy Grout of Waterbury as guardian and administrator roles for multiple estates.
A Democratic caucus in Mont nominated L. B. Brooks for a state or local representative role. Brooks won the nomination after a vote from 7 to close, with three others retiring from the caucus. W. J. Tyrrell refused to run for the office, affecting party plans.
Mise resident Millan formerly of Barre involved in a county court case near Montpelier. A verdict for Irvin Boyed Deputy Sheriff Hod Nabton noted in Boston returning train journey. Millan reportedly jumped from the northbound train during transit after surrender by last term.
Northfield Vermont September 27 thousands visited the Dog River Valley fair on its second day. Vermont forestry department displays a strong exhibit along with the University of Vermont agricultural service. The Rickford firm shows various sugars and tabor equipment while cattle and poultry exhibits attract attention. In Washington yesterday afternoon Henrietta Hon da and Lagi Columbo faced trial for personal injury from a kitchen quarrel at her home last spring. Attorney B A Hoar represented the plaintiff and H S Jackson the defense. the jury retired before noon and returned a verdict awarding the plaintiff $115. The court heard testimony of invasion to the home, a quarrel, and Grilling injuries including a blow with a broom and stave. The jury list included Alva Butler Wilton Glines and several others. A separate case Charles Barclay versus Wetmore & Moree Granite Co. began this afternoon before a jury as Edward Frost and J Kendall observed. Earlier, by order of Judge Frank T Fisk at 10 oclock, the grand jury met in special session to consider several matters. the prosecuting officer could not indicate session length.
A pail of gasoline ignited at 178 Meera Street Montpelier just before noon. Firefighters contained the blaze after four alarms, with Mrs. Rae attempting to douse the flames with water. Damage to the premises was limited and no serious injuries reported. Separately in Brattleboro and Middlebury, local incidents were noted including a man dragged by a cow and a fence injury during livestock handling.
In Barre, Aldermen confirm Dr Joseph A Wark as city physician amid a shift at the fire department. R D Carpenter resigns as regular fireman and seeks reassignment or enrollment as call firefighter.
