The nationwide steel strike persists as 350,000 workers press for “decent justice” from the government, with 10,000 still on strike amid continued demonstrations in Pittsburgh and surrounding districts. Police hold court in Farrell and Newcastle as clashes subside. Gov Sproul faces criticisms over trooper actions.
Corporation officials announced that the return of men began on the second day at Vittsluegh. The return was not large but steady. Details on the scale of the return and the impact on operations were provided by company spokesmen.
Tunke Grogan, a Serbian, was shot and killed by a state trooper today at Farrell Pennsylvania. Police watched a house under suspicion of being a sniping post from which shots had been fired at a steel plant.
The second day of the Washington fair opened under brisk winds with thousands visiting to view agricultural displays, horse races, and oxen matches. Rim races drew cheers as horses battled neck and neck. exhibits included fine needlework and floral layouts. Separate Caledonia county fair results note strong attendance and notable races, including a 2:20 pace and 2:80 class with various entrants and standings.

Paris Sept 25 Clemenceau told the French Assembly that if he had a word for the U S Senate it would be to hurry ratification of the German peace treaty He said France could count on America in peace as well as war and defended the league of nations noting Wilson’s aims while warning Germany’s aggression would threaten the world
President Wilson spoke in Denver about the power treaty and the nation’s duty to honor pledges for world peace. He said the issue is whether the United States will uphold its commitments after the league covenant and treaty debates.
Washington reports that the Senate will continue consideration of the peace treaty with Senator New Republican of Techma and Senator Smith Democrat of Maryland slated to speak. Amendments proposed by Senator Fall Republican of New Maxie and backed by a majority Forelen wilutions committee aim to reduce U S representation on several reconstruction commissions created by the treaty as it comes up for debate.
Rutland Sept 25 Vermont state Baptist convention adopts a resolution by lay delegates fixing minimum salaries for Baptist ministers at 1000 dollars yearly plus parsonage. The next convention is set for Newport June 20. Officers elected include Henry Bond president and a long list of vice presidents clerks and trustees.
Vermont conference of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist denomination held its annual meeting at the Heding church in Barre. Mrs. A. H. Webb was elected president and presided, with reports showing progress and pledges of 2500 for continued work.
Moody on docket lists 34 cases for October term across Bennington Rutland Chittenden Addison Franklin Grand Isle and others. Notable entries include Homme v State et al medical restraint case Hotton v Unason and Bartlett Bancroft v East Montpelier with several Windsor and Orange county actions awaiting trial.

The steamship Rosalind of the Red Cross line ran aground on Cow's Reef in Long Island Sound while traveling from St Johns and Halifax to New York. Our 140 passengers and 90 crew were found in no immediate danger as distress signals were received and passengers were permitted to land under immigration authority approval. The 3,000-ton vessel, chartered by Bowring and Company of New York, departed St Johns on September 20 and Halifax on September 23.
In the Pekov region southwest of Petrograd Esthonian troops annihilated two Bolshevik regiments yesterday. The Esthonian dispute has received report today from the area.

The annual meetings of Vermont Home Missionary Union and Vermont branch of the Woman’s Board of Missions met at Barre Congregational Church. Speakers included EC Woodley of Maraah, Turkey, who described seven years in Maraah and the impact of World War I on churches, schools, and pastors. Dr. Arthur Holt urged social reform and noted labor capital tensions and unrest as urgent issues.
Barre post of the American Legion reports 308 members enrolled, exceeding the Vermont state quota and securing 22 delegates for the upcoming state convention in Burlington. Membership by ward totals 226 in Barre city and 82 in Barre Town, with plans for a dance on Armistice Night and discussions on a bonus and war risk insurance.
A double wedding ceremony occurred at 2 o'clock at the home of the bride's parents Mr and Mrs C B Coon of Barre Maine. Bessie Cooney wed Harold Person of Calais and Erma Cooney married A Birnie Smith of Barre with Rev L A Cooney officiating. About 75 relatives and friends attended. Beulah Hater led the music while Bessie Joutey and Erma Cooney wore white gowns with veils. The couple's roves were decorated with autumn leaves and crepe paper. A wedding feast followed the ceremony, and the couples left for an extended wedding trip. The groom is a successful machinist in Calais and the bride has worked at the Little Woolen Mill in North Montpelier. Smith is connected with World Granite Co in Barre. Attendees came from Calais Montpelier North Montpelier Brooklyn New York and Westboro Maine. Gifts included silver linen cut glass and money. No cards will be sent.
Allan A. Morris retracted not guilty and pled guilty to assault with intent to commit rape on a Berlin girl as witnesses attended. Judgment set for Tuesday morning. Hale vs Morse trespass trial delayed as Morris plea alters schedule. Miller vs Belville jury awards plaintiff 1100 dollars amid numerous objections and an unusual father son juror detail.
An evening collision at Seminary and North Main in Graniteville involved a seven passenger Winton Six driven by Dr Rosiley and an Overland runabout with Dr E H Bailey and family. Mrs Nancy Smith was thrown from the rear seat, suffering a head cut, while others escaped serious injury. Rain and slippery roads contributed to the wreck. both cars damaged heavily and towed for repairs.
Charles H Wilkie died at his Barton winter home after influenza and pneumonia last year. An auto rainstorm in May aggravated his condition leading to tuberculosis and his closure of Hale Aurtion Rooms. He worked as an embalmer for A W Badger Co before starting his shop. He was born in Barton seventy seven years ago last July 15. Survived by wife Isabelle LaMere, three children Earl Remit Landis Lewis, his parents, and others. Burial planned in Barton. He was a Catholic and Knights of Columbus member. a delegation will attend the Barton meeting Saturday at 10 AM.
Ato Mariani proprietor of the Bijou moving picture theatre in Barre and John P. Gleason of Danby filed voluntary bankruptcy petitions in the U S court. Mariani shows debts around 1254 dollars with 1095 exempt. Gleason lists 214 dollars with 14 exempt. Largest creditor is Barre Savings Bank and Trust Co. with a note for rent and other charges.
