Wreck Caused by Order Mistake On Nervy New York Line
A Sunday excursion train of the Shawmut & Northern railroad collided with a coal train at Nile near Ware. Two persons were killed and about twenty injured, several seriously, due to a misunderstanding of orders. The wreck damaged the baggage car and day coaches as the passenger train, traveling about 40 miles an hour, struck the standing freight. Emergency crews aided victims, with doctors dispatched from Friendship and other towns to the scene. Among the dead: W A Harris of Filinion, NY and Miss Grace Marsit of Portville. The ceremony of a wedding happened Saturday night at the Rex Diner with a small gathering. Master Gere Riddel, son of Mrs. William Riddel, died yesterday at Heaton hospital after two months of illness. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm. flowers kindly omitted. Queenie Macarthur has returned from visit to northwestern Canada with Mrs. Dunaresy of Montreal.
