Camp Devens gears up to receive 2338 national army members from northern New York as 40 percent of the quota is due by Sunday. Swollen by thousands of veterans and residents, Ayer, Massachusetts, notes the wave of bringers from New England. Contingents from Boston and western Massachusetts will complete the quota by tomorrow.
F H Bruce a Rutland freight brakeman was fatally injured in the Bennington yard when he rode the locomotive pilot and was struck by a second engine. Both legs were severed, he died after hours of exposure, at 4 pm, after being brought to the freighthouse office. He was about 30 years old and gave his address as 47 Grand Street.
Washington D C Sept 22 The federal shipping board chairman Hurley says shipbuilders will soon hold conferences to frame voluntary agreements to stop poaching workers from rival plants. The move follows Pacific coast labor disputes that halted the government building program and may extend to other industries. The Seattle yard’s 3 5 percent wage rise sparked worker moves and sparked further wage demands. Labor leaders worry over rights to strike and bargain.
Rutland Vermont September 22 Rutland Railway Light and Power Co asks Vermont Public Service Commission for permission to raise trolley fares to six cents after October 16 providing no change in distance.
