British forces swept the Allied line within a mile of St Quentin, overrunning Hindenburg outpost positions and taking more than 8,000 German troops. Cambrai and St Quentin threaten renewed German positions as the advance continues through intervening towns.
British and Australian forces report heavy gains with more than 8,000 Germans captured in the Cambrai front drive. In Russia, Bolsheviks withdraw on both north and south fronts, Kumara held by Czerho-Slovaks, and forty guns seized. Australians strike at Villeret center, driving Germans back to fortified lines amid fierce counterattacks.
British forces renew attack in the St Quentin region pushing into the Hindenburg line north of Pontruet and Le Catelet. Australians seize outposts at Hindenburg line while German counterattacks near Trescault and Moeuvres are driven back with heavy losses. Washington D C Sept 19 The War Department released names of sixty three American soldiers held in German prison camps including six officers all lieutenants. Enlisted men listed with hometowns and states span Philadelphia Reading New Haven Baltimore and other cities with several from Pennsylvania and New England.
Dr. John D. Wheeler of Burlington resigns as medical aid to Gov. Graham. Dr. J. H. Woodruff of Barre is reassigned to fill the vacancy. Dr. Woodruff resigns from the Washington county Inca classification board. Dr. McGuire of Montpelier is appointed to take his place and will begin duties soon. Dr. Mayo of Northfield is named to Dr. McGuire's spot on Medical Board No. 9. Gov. Graham also appoints B. H. Bailey of Ganieville as assistant ax of the Washington county local board. Except for Bailey, these appointments were made by President Wilson. Dr. Woodruff holds captain rank and will undertake examinations heavily.
Ottawa broadcasts last night’s Canadian overseas casualty list with names including Wiatta Burng Maher Wood Stamford Roxbury Clampa New Bedford Muss Worcester Vassalboro Springfield Lawrence Proulx and others. The report lists casualties tied to various U S and Canadian towns and includes multiple spellings and truncated surnames.
Ottawa Sept 19 The overseas casualty list names New England men wounded today including F Whitney Boston A Stampsfield Lawrency Mass and Tomlinson Kennebunk Me. The report records their status as wounded with home towns indicated.
A Barre audience braved heavy rain to attend a Yama Yama musical at opera house last evening. Local talent performed creditably in a weather beaten program featuring lively dancing, varied numbers, and a humorous opening skit. The production, though limited by missing programs, impressed with a strong band and chorus, an improvised war-cast sequence, and a closing sketch led by Harry K. Gage.
George E Close, manager and treasurer of the George Close Co, a Cambridge, Massachusetts confectionery firm, died at Morrison farm near Barre after pneumonia. He had been visiting wife and two daughters, with death following a grip diagnosis and influenza complications. He was born June 27, 1878, in Cambridge, married in 1908 to Merté Myra Morrison, and leaves two daughters Emily Caroline and Lucile Nellie, four sisters and a brother. The body will be taken to Cambridge for funeral and burial.
Washington Sept 1 The House Ways and Means Committee approved extending the proposed special war tax of ten percent on business or occupation income to include all persons in professions and travel earning two thousand dollars or more per year.

Dean Gallican a private in the 57th Pioneer Infantry at Camp Wadsworth filed for annulment of his marriage to Glenm Sheldon Sloan, whom he wed in Montpelier February 8. Papers show Sloan had a husband Corporal Herbert A. Sloan of the Canadian artillery reserve, and that Gallican and Sloan have not lived together since he learned of Sloan’s previous marriage.
Washington informs that coordination and consolidation of facilities plus better traffic handling methods since government control of railroads have produced an estimated annual saving.
