William Heath a painter from Dalton New Hampshire was shot dead while painting the Dodge house in Bathing Atte Dodge a wealthy socialite is arrested and will face a preliminary murder hearing. Heaths wife and daughter survive Mrs Dodge claims she shot in self defense. autopsy confirms a heart wound from a revolver owned by Mrs Dodge.
In Chicngs on Sept 10 Mrs Amme Balia and two children died after she tried to light a fire with gasoline. Two other children were dying as authorities investigated the deadly accident initiated by the mother.

Leon Coburn was arraigned in Montpelier city court on obtaining money under false pretenses. Henry Carr and Charles Martin, with accomplices, aided a plan to swap horses with Coburn after a failed demand for payment. Police were alerted and Coburn was arrested.
In Rutland on September 19 William Pendergrass of Weymouth, just released from the house of correction after a 19 day intoxication sentence, broke his arm while in custody. He claimed the sling he fashioned from his torn shirt caused the injury and asked the judge to release him to travel home, but remained jailed for 69 days.
A three foot snake found in a mail bag tossed from a train near Butler triggers a federal search led by Post office inspector Craighead of Pittsburg. Miss Winifred Turk, Hillard postmistress, reported the reptile and the postal staff checked the scene while authorities investigated how it arrived. The incident comes as the pair of unrelated notes about state events and a 97 year old ex congressman’s death occupy the same page.
