Congress extends heartfelt thanks to General John J. Pershing and his American Expeditionary Force for their exemplary service in France during World War I. Speaker Gillett and Benatar Cuming credit leadership, valor, and unity of American arms, noting profound national pride and the enduring honor accorded to Pershing and his officers and men.
Morrieville baseball team lost to Moretown 7 to 3 yesterday afternoon in Montpelier. Morrieville led early, but Moretown batters rallied in the seventh, aided by two outs and a five-run rally. Pitchers Cinconi Polk and Starr anchored Moretown. Sillaway and Arkley for Morrieville. Other items note a county meeting, health board actions, and local notices as Montpelier buzzed with civic updates.
Washington telegram from President Wilson urges that police unions to press public pressure be neither countenanced nor permitted. Senate committee hears that Washington police may abandon affiliation with the American Federation of Labor. Police officials consider withdrawal to avoid further controversy.
A statement by Kitty Oyster, secretary to Samuil Garapwire of the American Federation of Labor, says the federation backs the striking Boston policemen while no general strike is planned. Oyster was en route to Washington to brief his chief on local conditions as ambulances rush to Roxbury where state guardsmen have been housed. Reports say a guard fired a weapon, wounding six soldiers in the legs. they are at City Hospital with slight injuries.
Bt Louis Sept 16 It became known today that no warrant for Emma Goldman’s deportation was served last Friday at Jefferson City penitentiary where she completed a two year term for attempting to obstruct the army draft. Her release date is set for Sept 27. New York Sept 18 The labor department has notified counsel that upon release Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman will be rearrested and held for deportation. Kerkman’s term at the federal penitentiary in Atlanta expires Oct 6.
Five masked men bound and robbed the mail car of the Ocean Limited near Harelake Quebec. They seized 875000 in silver being shipped from Montreal to Halifax, halting the express train run and prompting a police appeal for clues.
Newport, Sept. 18. Williams offers Newport City Hospital ten thousand dollars in warrants and his residential property at the corner of Linavena and Elm streets. He reserves an annuity of 100 dollars for himself or wife for life. If the city accepts, the property may be sold later to raise funds.
The Barre Congregational Church hosts the 32nd Vermont Women's Home Missionary Association meeting and the 47th Vermont branch of the Woman's Board of Foreign Missions on Sept 29 and 24. Programs include devotional services, educational talks, mission study, addresses by Rev. C Merrill and Miss Miriam F Chowte, and a children's rally with a missionary dramatization. The executive committees meet Sept 23. meals and fellowship planned at nominal prices.
Burlington aldermen approve fare hikes and wage increases for traction workers. Board approves seven cent and nickel carfares, retroactive to August 1, with motormen and conductors earning 40 cents per hour first half year, 42 cents second half, and 4 cents thereafter. Arbitration committee members George Mett B Whitney and John J Whalen reported the terms to Mayor Jackson.
Fire broke out shortly before 2 AM in Glover at Noah Wren’s store partition, threatening adjacent buildings including Wesley Sherburne’s furnace house. The Drew goods stock, books, and state orders were a total loss. the store’s burler shop, pool room, and lunch counter were damaged. Sparks touched Bonifys and other structures but were contained.
In Noank Connecticut on September 18, George Fish shot and killed his wife Etta Fish in an upper room as she retrieved a judge of probate’s hat. Miss Tren Sayers escaped, and Frances Fish, age four, was slain before Fish hanged himself in a barn. The couple’s quarrel had led to a separation.
In Washington county court the Worthen Button versus W C Knight alienation of affections case heard late Wednesday. The criminal conversation charge was dropped. testimonies covered Knight and Mrs Button’s reputation, riding habits, intoxication, and gun ownership. Other matters included A G Anasto of Warren versus H W Brooks timber damages, and a divorce filing Edith Whiting versus Arthur Whiting.
A telegram to ex mayor Robert Gordon of Orange Street announced the death of his 14 year old daughter Georgina Gordon in Lynn Massachusetts after a two week battle with typhoid fever at Swan Hospital. She trained as a nurse during the past year and attended Spaulding Wilberforce and Barre schools. Born November 1, 1800 in the city, she is survived by her parents, a brother Douglas of Lynn, sisters Mary in Danville, Jennie in Waltham, Mass and Helen in Barre. The body is to arrive tomorrow morning and the funeral will be held at 2 PM from the home tomorrow.
A settlement was agreed yesterday between George H Pixley of its town and Mrs Mary C Bullock of Oullfund regarding damages from a four horse whip incident. Mrs Bullock agreed to pay Pixley a small sum to cover farm work and other costs, with court action dropped. The case arose after Pixley claimed injuries from a whip strike in a dairy yard when payment for wood had been pursued and delayed.
James Imlah of Longstreet died last evening at 6 50 after a long tubercular illness. Born January 2 1850 in New Deer Scotland he worked 36 years in granite and was a Clan Gordon member. Survived by his wife Tanbel Adams four children brother Robert and sister Isabella Keness. Funeral Saturday 1 30 at Congregational church Rev F L Goodspeed. interment Elmwood cemetery. flowers omitted.
Barre drive for American Legion membership surged to the 100 mark at headquarters as ex service men flocked to reach Barre’s 300 quota. Ward gains ranged from 30 to 52 percent. town totals climbed to 32 percent, with campaign efforts continuing through next Wednesday and delegates to the Burlington state convention upcoming.
A report from Boston details the Peerless Knitting Mill Co restructuring efforts. A committee review praised by attendees recommends Mowers and Ladd to the board to represent Barre stockholders and authorizes by law changes. Officials assess site proposals. construction may start soon. A special city meeting at 7:30 p.m. will decide tax exemption for the new company.
The Vermont Methodist Missionary Society plans a home missionary rally in Barre next week September 24 and 25. The event features team meetings with notable speakers touring New England to discuss various faith works and inspiration for the society. Attendees from across the region are expected as speakers include Mrs. W. P. Thirkield and others.
In Barre County a collision between a motorcycle and a Ford car on the Jerue curve of the Barre Montpelier road last evening left Mrs M L Lewis of South Barre and Harold Spaulding of Duxbury hospitalized. Mrs Lewis suffered a dislocated hip and other injuries, while Spaulding had multiple cuts and a dislocated knee cap. The drivers escaped serious injury but both sustained bruises. An X ray on Mrs Lewis's hip was performed.
Two cars met on a narrow bridge approach between Northwest and Montpelier last evening. Neither occupant was hurt as speeds were slow. Archin Adame drove Fond car with his wife and mother. his car broke its wishbone and could not proceed. The other car carried Mr Angetl and party from Brookfield, suffering no damage. The Adams party reached Harve. wrecking crew later removed the disabled vehicle.
Mae E. Rugg, 20, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon W. Rugg, was killed when struck by a motor vehicle on Akulluroe Street as she waited near a railroad crossing. The car, traveling south at high speed, kept going after the impact, leaving only the tail light imprint and a lone plume of smoke. Police reported no driver identification.
At Georgia Plain near Bt Albans John I Locke was injured when the car he rode in slipped off a culvert due to a poor culvert condition. The vehicle rolled. Locke suffered a fracture of the right collarbone and was taken for treatment. No other injuries reported. The trip was to collect records for genealogy being prepared by Mrs Pitkin.
