Report from American and Allied dispatches describe German forces burning towns along the Moselle while retreating behind the Hindenburg line in Lorraine. Prisoners claim the 31st German division was captured and a larger 36th Austrian division bore the brunt of prior assaults near St Mihiel as American units advance.
London reports Secretary of War Newton D Baker praised American troops in France. He plans a brief return to London then France again, recalling the St Mihiel area sighting and a massive artillery barrage. He praised the soldiers discipline and care for German prisoners, noting most wounds were minor.
Petrograd reports that American, British and French detachments joined Russian troops to clash with Bolsheviks on the Archangel front. After an initial retreat, Bolshevik forces were repulsed by British reinforcements and fled in panic. Several Bolshevik officers allegedly deserted to the British.
London reports Serbian and French forces push through Macedonia front, advancing over four to eight kilometers and widening the front to more than 30 kilometers. London reported by telegraph that Franco-Serbian troops breached Bulgarian lines in Mace doni early Sunday, seizing Bokol Dopropolje and Vetrenike positions after a fierce fight, according to today’s war office announcement.
Bulgarian regiments have arrived at Maubeuge to cooperate with German troops on the Western front, according to Echo Belge. The report notes the deployment in the Maubeuge area with Belgian confirmation dated Sept 17.
Paris reports air action on September 1 to 16 with French aviators claimed twelve German machines destroyed in numerous combats. London Sept. 16 Foreign Secretary Balfour voiced opposition to Germany’s return of colonies. He said conferences on this topic would be useless and Germany will insist on restitution of colonies. He warned no conversations can bridge the deep divide over colonial possessions and naval bases.
From American lines in Lorraine on Monday evening the enemy appeared to pull back behind the Hindenburg line and dig in. Ponta-Mousson and Dieulouerd, four miles south, were shelled by German forces who used mustard gas and continued limited artillery fire as the quiet front persisted.
Vancouver on September 17 reports explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson stating a northern island about the size of Ireland has been found. The British flag was raised on June 19, 1915 on land once called Gustav Adolpha rea. Stefansson arrived from the north and heads to Victoria to report to Canada on five and a half years of Arctic experience with Storker Storkersen and four men carrying out the plan.
London reports say British lines closed in further northwest of St Quentin with Haig noting progress toward Le Verguier. Despite foggy wording the dispatch emphasizes gains in the Le Verguier area and slight positional improvements north of Hulluch and northeast of Nenge Chapel on the Flanders front.
Five Black servicemen executed after court martial sentences for alleged wartime actions were carried out at dawn at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio. The men had previously faced tribunals in Houston for partial wartime participation and were confirmed by President Wilson.

Washington D C Sept 17 The War Department announced names of American soldiers held prisoners in Germany camps. Officers named include First Lieutenant Clifford A McElwain Albany Mo and Lieutenant Alexander A Roberts Gulfport Miss among others from various states and towns.
About 4000 men at the naval training station Great Lakes aviation camp are in quarantine due to a Spanish influenza outbreak. The event affects military readiness and local health measures as officials work to contain the spread.
Senator Lodge of Massachusetts commends President Wilson for rejecting Austria’s secret and non binding peace proposal. He praises the president’s prompt refusal and says America's position is becoming clear enough that even the Central Powers will understand. The Vermont official canvass of the September 10 primaries shows Percival W. Clement of Rutland with 12 060 votes, Charles H. Darling 11 408, Frank J. Howe 9 128, and Democrat W. B. Mayo receiving 2 485 votes. County canvass notes Mayo strong in Northfield and Mayo campaign figures cited.
Mrs Eugene Sullivan received a tele ox from the adj general informing her of the death of her son Sergeant Joseph J Sullivan of the infantry who was killed in action on July 18 He had served four years since volunteering in 1914 He leaves his mother a brother famed Sullivan and a sister Mrs Patrick OConnell all of this city His father Tate Eugene Sullivan died in 1911.
Joseph Sartori a granite cutter died at his home on Merchant Street extension after a three month illness. Born in Italy he was 45 and had worked as a skilled granite cutter. His wife and children live in Italy. Relatives in America are none and friends will arrange burial. He belonged to the Barre branch of the granite cutters union.
Acting Adjutant General Johnson received word that W J Towne likely of Washington D C will arrive in Montpelier on Saturday September 21 to give instruction to the board of instruction operating with the draft On September 23 Mr Towne will be in Rutland for the same purpose
