In Usbridge Massachusetts, Sept 1, Mrs Jeremiah Goul Watt left five children with a neighbor while tending a kettle on an oil stove. The six month old child burned to death when a stove exploded. The mother smashed a window amid flames to reach the child, injuring her hand. the door could not be opened and the infant was found nearby.

Fire of unknown origin began in the cellar of the Alloy hotel at four pm Saturday destroying that building and the United States customs house and the Bell house. Loss around 25000 with about 12000 insurance. Bucket brigades saved other properties as flames raced through wooden structures. The Albury and Bell houses were owned by Goodsell and Bell, with the customs house tied to the Brush-Freedsell-Ayre concern. all will be rebuilt.

In Waterbury on a Saturday night a small blaze broke out in an unoccupied room of a factory near the Southern end of town close to the milk factory and Demeritt Palmer Parking Co. Mrs Edwarde saw the fire from her window and raised the alarm. The Edwards family and neighbors hurried to extinguish it with a hose before firefighters arrived, possibly saving adjacent buildings. The cause remains a mystery.
