The Senate opens discussion on the treaty with Senator McCumber accusing it of selfish aims. The debate is expected to run for several weeks in an open executive session until the final ratification vote by the senators.
Senator McCumber urged rejection of all proposed amendments to the German peace treaty and modification of strong reservations led by Senator Lodge. He denounced the majority report as self serving and immoral while defending his own six reservations as alternatives. He warned the United States could be drawn from world leadership if the league purposes and withdrawal provisions were mishandled.
Washington Sept 19 The Senate Foreign Relations Committee planned to begin debate on the peace treaty and the league covenant in an open executive session. Chairman Lodge aimed to call up the pact by 2 oclock to be continued until the final ratification vote weeks hence.
Hartford sept The Underwood typewriter plant reopened this morning after a brief shutdown caused by the July strike. About 800 employees, including senior student Ward of Baltimore and companion Stanton of New York, began returning to work while some will do temporary outside assignments.
Geneva reports that Gabriele D Annunzio, with anti Italians, has declared Fiume united with Italy. Fiume fell into chaos as Italian troops evacuated, authorities were expelled, and Italian general Pittaliga was arrested. British and French troops fortified quarters while crowds tore down allied barriers. Serbian authorities reportedly remain in Surak suburb.
Inland progress of the tropical hurricane strands Brownsville and Corpus Christi, isolating both cities as wires fail. Brownsville reports the worst of the storm near that area passed with no fire loss. Corpus Christi records winds near 60 miles per hour and a serious situation. Coast cities, including Galveston, report heavy property damage but no fatalities.
The ministerial air lobbying for reworking five battleships stalled since 1015 faces opposition in both chambers. Naval engineers favor modernization but lawmakers push to dismantle hulls to save costs, amid new warfare traditions.

Seach is under way for Captain Moon and 11 crew members of the steamer Barnstable after it sank in a northeast gale near St. Catherine Island. The 404 ton vessel bound for Havana with coal went down half a hour after springing a leak. Fifteen crew members were aboard, with survivors reaching Isle of Hope and Isle of Ref Hope as hopes rise for more rescues. Among the missing are the mate, chief engineer, assistant engineers, boatswain, and several seamen.
Philadelphia witnesses a deadly flare in a restaurant in the southern Menton area as two men die and two are wounded in what police call a renewal of the Black Hand feud. Indicted shooter Jovanni Cancels and others tied to past shootings are under scrutiny amid a broader Thalian-NY faction vendetta. Six men and the restaurant owner’s wife are detained for questioning.
Paris Sept 1 An official note from the American delegation states Colonel Edward M House will stay in Paris for an uncertain period. He has been in London during July and August serving on a committee drafting mandates and trusteeship principles for territories under mandate. The committee's final meeting in Paris hinges on priority matters before the Supreme Council.

George W Flagg a renowned veteran wrestler and Civil War veteran died at his East Braintree home after a brief illness. About 12 000 workers remain off due to the walkout while 2 000 from the Storrs mine at Dickinson City report full operation. She suffered a broken arm and bruises and was taken to Barre City Hospital. Sullivan's car to Perry garage for repairs, hotel manager Bowen to handle damages.

Miss Autumn Linton daughter of Mr and Mrs James Linton Windsor married Thomas Nichols formerly of Barre at the bride's Windsor home Saturday morning. Rev J Lucas officiated the double ring ceremony with only immediate relatives attending. The bride wore blue Begette and a sister Mary Linton wore green taffeta. Best man was Perley Davis of Windsor. A wedding breakfast followed before the couple left for Barre and will reside in Windsor.

Boston Sept 16 The Supreme Court dismissed the equity bill by Boston and Maine railroad stockholders seeking to block reorganization. Chief Justice wrote there was no merit in the petitioners claims that the $313.6 million indebtedness or the restructuring violated due process or equal protection. The Public Service Commission's approval, based on a legislative net, allowed Boston & Maine to own all leased lines and leave bonds and stock totaling about $819 million to refund floating debt.

He was married to Rosa Qerti and leaves children Annie 15 Neve 9 Stella 3. Funeral planned Wednesday afternoon.
Vermont Adjutant General sent about 40 riot guns and 20 000 rounds to Boston by Saturday night under a Mas Massachusetts authority order. The weapons, identical to those used by American troops in France, were sent while Vermont police strike continues. The shipment does not deplete Vermont’s local supply and may be recalled if needed.
