Vigorous counter-attacks have been launched by German forces on the northern end of the Hindenburg Line as Allied troops advance. Only small gains were reported, though the fight remained intense and decisive positions were under threat.
Allied forces push toward the Hindenburg line along a broad front. In the Vermand region Haig’s troops close on St Quentin from the north as French forces advance from the south. British foothold gained at Peiziere and Epehy near Le Catelet while Germans counter at Gouzeaucourt. The fight near Moeuvres and Rcourt Saint Quentin sees British ground held. German war office claims repulses south of Ypres and north of the La Bausée canal with prisoners taken. Epehy attacked but Britons driven back with 4,000 Germans taking prisoners.
British troops gain a foothold between Roisel and Carcoing and push toward the Hindenburg line. They advance through Trescalet toward Marcoin gld and occupy trenches facing the enemy near the old line.
Paris reports say French forces seized Travae at the southern end of the Hindenburg line. Holding Travecy could outflank the La Fore defense near the St Gobain massif, two miles north of Traeye. The capture marks a significant gain in the battle along the northern front.

Atlantic City N J Sept 11 Women in service as ambulance private and nurses on the war fronts will be admitted to the full honors of the army and navy union along with the soldiers in the present war, according to a plan mapped out by the national executive committee of the organization announced here today.
Amsterdam reports The Telegraaf eyewitness says the 2nd German regiment refused to board a train for the western front on Aug 31. A second regiment refused to fire on comrades. A home guard detachment of youths was ordered to fight and 11 boys were killed with many wounded.
Cleveland Sept 11 The defense in the Eugene V Debs espionage case said it would present no testimony of its own and would let the government evidence stand Debs will address the jury in his own behalf after the last government witness is finished.
The government faces unions sending five communiques criticizing insufficient food. They warn of growing exhaustion and rising deaths among children and the elderly. They demand an end to policies favoring producers and urge immediate supply of adequate food.
Dispatch from Paris reports from Teheran that Turks have killed Christians. Among the victims are Father Souteg, a French Lazarist priest, and several other priests. The notice notes the ongoing violence targeting Christian communities with confirmed fatalities.

Washington September 1 A call issued by the provost marshal general seeks 2000 men qualified as stenographers and typists. Entraining September 23, selected from all states and the District of Columbia, the call outlines the limited service eligibility and mobilization date.
The first portion of Russia's war indemnity to Germany, 250000000 rubles, was sent from Moscow to Berlin on Saturday, with the transfer reported by an Exchange Telegraph dispatch from Copenhagen.
Waterbury voters chose G. K. Moody over E. S. Newcombe in the Republican ticket by 344 to 108. The Democratic nominee D. T. Harvey received 30 votes.

The State Department announced receipt of the message and noted it did not reveal whether Bolshevik authorities organized the violence or it stemmed from general anarchy.
Tomorrow is the registration day for men aged 18 to 45 in Barre. Registrants must report to city hall to complete a card with name, age, address, birthplace, occupation, employer, and relatives, with a later mailed questionnaire.
Frost last night and early today hit New England crops. The Weather Bureau cites especially heavy damage in northern Vermont and New Hampshire. Northfield Vermont fell to 20 degrees and a killing frost was reported in Quebec. In Concord New Hampshire the low was 32 degrees with damage to war gardens in low-lying areas. temperatures reached 45 degrees in parts of Massachusetts towns like Lowell and Lawrence.
Virtually all of western New York woke to a killing frost this morning with central and northern areas reporting the deep freeze. Buffalo and Watertown saw lows near 32 to 40 degrees, damaging grapes, corn and potatoes as grape crops suffer substantial losses across the region.
Vice-Admiral Sims dispatch from Washington reports a British liner off the British coast was torpedoed while carrying American troops. All on board were saved, according to the Navy Department.
2800 American soldiers aboard were saved after a troop ship was torpedoed in a large convoy off the European coast. Crew beached the vessel to speed the transfer to destroyers, with no injuries reported. Troop origins included Chicago and Cleveland, many from factory work, showing soldierly discipline.
Vermont primaries yield Percival Clement leading for governor on the Republican ticket with 826 votes, while Dr. W. B. Mayo runs unopposed for the Democratic nomination. Harry Black narrowly defeats Walter Farnsworth for secretary of state, and Frank Archibald wins attorney general. A group of 2,540 soldiers comforted at an inland England rest camp recount their survival after a torpedo attack last Friday off the coast. New York report states the British passenger steamer Missanabie 12469 tons in Admiralty service was sunk by a submarine while returning to the United States from Europe. The Missonabie loss was confirmed today by the Canadian Pacific Ocean line. The steamer sailed Sept. 6 from an Italian port with 60 soldiers and several passengers and was torpedoed on Sept. 6. It is believed by the shipping that none of the passengers were lost.
About 600 ballots were cast in yesterday's primary in Barre. Frank B. Howes wins governor race with 243 votes to Clement 178 and Darling 125. Democratic Dr. Mayo posts 67 votes. City supports Diack for secretary of state 104 to 104 Farnsworth. Johnson for attorney general 193 to 102 Linol opponent. Ayers chosen Republican city representative. McDonald Democratic nominee with 250 total votes.
The Vermont auditor of accounts announced two of Graham vouchers were recovered, numbers 295 for 000 and 1880 for 80121, from the office while Fred Pratt of Rutland served as inspector of finance. One voucher totals 8781.40 for salary and the other 261.80 for salary with 10041 for expenses. The larger sum was signed in December 1902, the other in August 1905, with the missing vouchers found in a drawer in the Graham office.
