A huge central span of the Quebec Bridge collapsed while workers were maneuvering it into place. Thousands watched as a monstrous weight slipped and fell, causing a large number of people to be affected by the incident.
The central span of Quebec's new bridge collapsed during hoisting over the St Lawrence River, plunging 200 feet with about 90 men on board. Built at 17 million dollars to shorten the Halifax to Canadian Northwest rail run, it mirrors the 1907 disaster that killed 70. Spectators and officials witnessed the fall, with initial death toll reported as 25.

Charles King of Portland Maine collapsed on Court Street in Montpelier amid illness. The 65 year old visitor to Montpelier died of teat disease and his body was moved to the undertaker rooms. He leaves a wife and five children in Portland and relatives in Williston and Dallas. Burial planned in Burlington.
Italian government considers adopting a blacklist in principle as Rome reports that the list drafted by France and England will be used, with additions Italy approves. Separately Vdeon F Molden of South Turre dies after an appendectomy operation in Montpelier Heaton hospital. Holden Hollen born Barre March 1 1874, married Mate Stone in 1901, leaves wife three children and siblings. funeral held at Holden farm Elmwood Cemetery.

William Lloyd Garrison Stafford a longtime Barre figure died September 4 in Whittier Massachusetts. He served in Civil War units and later lived in California and Barre where he worked in the granite industry and ran a shoe store. Surviving are his wife Jennie L. Miller and five children including Paul and Philip Stafford.
Members of the Caledonia County Bar Association of Vermont attended a dinner hosted by Judge Warland R. Howe in St John, New York, at the Mount Washington Tengier room Saturday evening. About 34 guests were present including Tadge Henry Ide and ex-ambassador to Spain Hinder Cres. Tatt, with other notable attendees. A few diners returned Sunday to share time with friends.
