Paris reports successful French raids last night on German positions in Champagne and Argonne. Artillery bombardment raged on both banks of the Meuse as the center of the Fosse and Courieres woods fell, with a few prisoners captured.
German forces briefly secured a foothold on the right bank of the Meuse in a three kilometer sector near hill 344. French counterattacks reclaimed most positions and took prisoners while other German assaults north of Bois Le Chaume were driven back. Continuous rifle and intermittent cannon fire persisted along the front with disputed gains near Wavrille and Jatan areas.
Ayer Massachusetts reported more than 10 900 people visited Camp Devens on Sunday. National Army traffic policemen directed thousands of cars around construction roads. Visitors could tour the camp commissary and barracks but not soldiers rooms. The city draft batch from Dover New Hampshire included Mayor Frederick Beckwith and six others, departing with a farewell send off in Nashua.
Ex telephone linemen drafted for the national army may not finish enlistments. Many seek transfer to navy or other branches. Coast Guard in New York lists pay of 25 dollars monthly with quarters and subsistence. Eligible draftees are urged to report. applicants not desired.

St Johnsbury Sept 10 Alever Puller was killed and four others injured when their car slid off Barton Works hill, toppled 20 feet into trees. Driver William McDonald and passengers Mrs Fuller Miss Jonnie McDonald escaped. Mrs McDonald and others uninjured. Another car driven by J B Vignault skidded nearby with minor injuries.
Frank Wosniak of West Rutland, employed by Vermont Marble at Center Rutland, died five hours after being struck by a Ford driven by Lauln Myers of West Rutland. Authorities investigate criminal negligence charges. Myers to face arrest when State's Attorney Poulin returns. Witnesses say Wosniak walked along the road near marble shops. the car struck him while passing a rail track, wheels running over his abdomen. He died at Rutland Hospital at 10:30 p.m. after internal injuries.

Margaret Appleton Means daughter of Mr and Mrs David McGregor Means of Middlebury and New York City married Charles Thomas Payne of New York City and Litchfield Conn in a garden ceremony at Stonetop Ledge. Rev Langdon Stewartson and President John M Thomas presided.
In Woodshire New Hampshire two touring cars collided on a curve about a mile north of town at 10 10 yesterday morning. Driver A H Merrill of Lisden No W and J Chamberlin of Hast Ryegate Wisconsin were in the other car. Miss Lottie Aldrich of Lichen suffered head and facial cuts from the windshield shard. Chamberlin sustained a forearm fracture and chest bruises. A Aldrich of East Ryegate had a deep cut above one eye and numerous bruises. All three were taken to Cottage hospital for several days.
A large barn burned causing an estimated $6,100 to $6,0000 in damage. Fred Holton observed the blaze with firefighters responding after a wiring defect. All livestock perished except one calf. A nearby shed suffered minor damage but remained intact.
The body of Thomas F. Smith, a Central Vermont yard employee, lay in a wheelbarrow at Hare Morningside Cemetery. A double barreled shotgun with an empty shell was nearby. State's Attorney William H. Daley calls it a possible suicide, noting Smith was a drinking man who did not own a gun and the weapon's origin is unclear. Smith was the son of Harry Smith and was not married.
Arthur Howland, 74, a Burlington veteran, died at 189 North Main Street after a kitchen accident. Autopsy pending to confirm exact cause. Survived by his brother Curtia and nephew Bert. funeral plans awaiting arrangements with Maplewood Cemetery noted.
President Wilson and Mrs Wilson, aboard the Mayflower, came ashore near noon in Gloucester escorted by Colonel and Mrs House. An official inquiry began in Barre city hall into the death of James B. Edward, a Barre granite manufacturer, killed near the Depot Square crossing west of Anglie. The proceeding, led by W. A. Dutten, examined train crew members including Engineer William Chavez and Conductor Frank Casnave, who testified about the blocked crossing and ensuing collision.
In Montpelier on Sunday over 2,000 residents gathered to honor 10 drafted men and three substitutes from Washi county. Governor Graham and Mayor Mitchell spoke at city hall before the group traveled by auto to a Central Vermont depot for departure. The local board, with help from Barre and Montpelier Women’s Relief corps, presented lunches and cigars for the journey to Ayer, Maine, where they would join other Vermont draftees headed overseas.

A robbery report from Reston states a car was stolen last night with a three year old present briefly inside. The suspected thieves fled toward Dorchester after the use of the vehicle, leaving the child safely with a guardian before the vehicle was taken.
