A dramatic and unexpected deportation into Vermont occurred this morning near Colebrook New Hampshire. The suspect resisted arrest, fighting as if furious. Police reported a chaotic scene before custody was secured and transported for processing.
Harry K. Thaw, deported from Canada into Vermont, wandered for hours through Coos county New Hampshire before being captured near Lancaster. Immigration officials rushed him toward the Vermont border as local sheriffs mobilized, while Thaw resisted and claimed kidnapping. The episode spanned Vermont New Hampshire and Quebec with rapid movements and varied accounts.
Manchester Sept 10 William Tray ore Jerome arrived by auto from Loationok at 9 oclock and received an Anso plated dispatch about Harry Thaw being moved by Canadian immigration from Coutinook to the Vermont border. Jerome, puzzled by the lack of clear information, indicated he could not explain Thaw’s whereabouts. He planned to seek east and north connections in North Adams.
Ottawa Sept 10 J Doherty acting minister of the interior said he rejected Thaws appeal from the immigration boards inquiry upholding its findings and ordering Thaws deportation forthwith. The writ of habeas corpus in Montreal did not enjoin immigration authorities from taking this step.
Montreal report says Thaw’s family and lawyers felt stunned by news of deportation. J N Greenfields, a Thaw advocate, laments the writs of prohibition and habeas corpus and questions the legitimacy of the move while promising further action to bring Robert, the assistant, before the King’s Bench.
Acting Governor Taft wires the Vermont and New Hampshire offices asking that Thaw be arrested and held for New York. A similar telegram went from the attorney general to the Maine governor.
Syracuse Sept 1 Lord Dewey captured three honors in the Empire State Stake at the Grand Circuit meet. He withstood presses by Reusens Goer’s trotter to win after five heats and a $10,000 purse amid a string of close finishes and identical times in the first three heats.
Newport marks Commodore Oliver Howard Perry centennial with a state holiday. The Perry birthplace hosts main events as the parade features his battle sword.
Francis C. Miville, a prominent Dusloeke man from Manchester New Hampshire, died at Graves cottage Camp Overbrook Mallets Bay at 12 29 yesterday after a brief illness with acute gastroenteritis. He arrived Thursday to join his family and had been in good health until Sunday. Born in St Ann Quebec he moved to Manchester 21 years ago and ran a drug business for 41 years. A staunch Democrat active in local affairs he visited Iris town summers. Survived by wife Josephine L four sons Charles J Emile D Leo four daughters Yvonne Irene and two brothers Narcisse Clovis Edmond and two sisters Clementine and Mrs Alfred Roy.
Brattleboro on September 10 reports the Windham county bar association meeting with 25 members approving Justice Loveland Munson of Manchester for chief justice to fill the vacancy caused by Judge Rowell's resignation and elevating Chief Judge W W Miles of the superior court to the supreme court bench.
Woodstock opening day crowds mark a strong start to the Windsor county fair with granges floral displays and broad department turnout. Glenn Lobitelts Judy wins the half mile in a tight run, Leon Millers Hie Van second, D. Eckiston Nora third. Cloud land farm takes first in the ladies driving horse event, Mrs. A. F. Fiske second, Mrs. G. W. Merrill third. Chester Cady of Barnard wins the farmers race as frost and warmth mix for tonight and tomorrow.
Essex Junction Sept 10 an Italian man known as Tumbo was shot dead near the dam of Burlington Bay Power company project by derrick foreman Benny Mazella. Mazella fled pursued by two Italians who were later arrested with Mazella and jailed in Burlington.
About 90 freshmen arrive as Norwich University enters its ninety sixth year with a large opening retreat at eight o clock in the evening. Attendance is set to surpass 175 cadets, the largest in the college’s history, amid summer renovations and staff changes.
A late night runaway accident in Bakersfield killed Elmer Blodah, about 30, and seriously hurt his wife. Driving home, their horse bolted, turning into Mrs. Samuel Hall’s yard and throwing Blodah against an elm tree, fracturing his skull. The wife’s injuries were described as serious with exact extent unknown.
Washington County Medical Society members gathered for annual seating at Massie. Dr K A Colton of Montpelier was named president with Dr K B Watson of Williamstown as vice president and Dr D J Barmyil of Randolph as secretary treasurer. Dr E A Colton presented a paper on serame and anti taxation, sparking discussion. Many physicians attended including Drs Chandler Gheenies Hunt Harkase Are and Metluire of Montpelier, Burbank of Calais, Wideton of Williamstown, Stickney Camp Leone ard Laxell Chandler Woodruff and Jackson of Barre. The society is flourishing with several meetings planned.
Barre's school enrollment reached 2457 on the first day, an increase from last fall and expected to grow by week’s end. Spaulding school reported 263 pupils, 40 more than a year ago, while beginners numbered 230 versus 316 last year. The Mathewson building, a naval academy, registered 583 pupils the Spaniding building followed with 497, most in high school.
The aviator Bays dorfer, of Mineola, who fell at the Dog River Valley fair in Northfield last week, is not progressing as physicians expected. Allen Adams, the injured aviator’s machinist, reports Tadogorfer suffered a telapae and lost consciousness, with bruises and lacerations from the plunge. Tadogorfer’s condition improved slightly yesterday, but he remains in severe pain. His wife was summoned to Northfield and may move to his home in New York.
The Democratic tariff bill, altered after Senate passage, returns to the House for a conference. Details remain unclear as negotiators prepare to merge differing House and Senate provisions.

A home wedding was held at 31 Liberty Street last evening as Miss Elizabeth Ann Brechin wed Harry Orison Stafford. Rev. George H. Holt performed the ceremony before about 60 guests, with Lohengrin’s bridal chorus played. The couple, bridesmaids Lena Mooney and best man William Spear, exchanged vows under a bower of evergreens and hydrangeas. After a luncheon, gifts included silver and a gold puree. The couple will reside at 41 Long Street after Sept 25, with a two week honeymoon to Boston and Canada.
Mrs Marcia Emery marked her sixth? birthday with a quiet gathering at 10 Washington Street yesterday afternoon. Friends arrived between 2 and 3 o'clock bearing birthday cakes and gifts including a handmade embroidered handkerchief and flowers. Postcards with greetings totaled over AC, and attendees noted her cheerful disposition, sound faculties, and continued work despite limited mobility. She was born in Washington and has lived in Barre for more than 20 years. Mr Emery, an early Barre storekeeper, died over 20 years ago.
A vigorous grass fire on the French estate behind Franklin Street burned over three acres of pasture and meadow land yesterday afternoon. Firefighters battled the flames for more than an hour aided by old coats blankets and shovels. Brisk north winds kept the blaze threatening nearby property though damage remained inconsequential. Several landowners own the burned area and crews built rack fires to halt spread.
Informal announcement lists Mrs Henry Wells of Main street Burlington to wed Mepiel L Cady of West Main Street New York City. Ceremony set for St Pauls church in Burlington during the first week of October. Cady, a retired New York attorney, is about BX years old and renowned for a Vermont alumni poem delivered at Williston 120th anniversary celebrations.
In a council session, representatives of Marrion & OLeary Guidie Hi, Dewey Co, Hoyt & Lebonrovan push to share sewer costs for a South Front street line to serve three granite firms. Health Officer Woodruff cites state policy that factories may need sewers, but the board considers city responsibility. Various permit approvals and building bids follow as the meeting continues.
