General Pershing returned to New York aboard the Leviathan amid a great ovation. The leader of America’s war effort was greeted by crowds and dignitaries, likened to ancient heroes, as his ship docked in the city this morning.
General John J. Pershing arrives aboard the Leviathan greeted by throngs along the bay and on Manhattan, with six destroyers and planes overhead. He is welcomed by Secretary Baker, dignitaries, and civic leaders, receives a new combat command scroll, thanks the nation, and praises the American army and fallen comrades before departing for City Hall and a victory spectacle.
Paris dispatch reports France will ratify a treaty soon as crowds wave greeting in Hoboken. The ceremony begins September 10 with expected Senate action following similar patriotism and praise for the Deed.
President Wilson, in Omaha during a speaking tour, rejects proposals for reservations to the League of Nations. He argues a blanket withdrawal clause would let sponsors interfere before joining and says Article Ten reservations are unnecessary. He notes the Monroe Doctrine is widely accepted after the Paris conference.
Washington emiity court will conv. Fire broke out last night on Board 1 at 0 o'clock Tuesday morning. Charles A. Smith deputy sheriff will proclaim Admiral Rodman's. Flagship wirks opening of court in the absence of San Francisco sheriff H. Tracy in charge of polling at the plate fair. Judge M. Sintter of Ruthind will preside over this term. The jury will arrive Wednesday afternoon. The first docket includes Tevid Hawking guardianship appeal. There are 46 jury cases and 36 not on the calendar. Schools in Barre City open for test tomorrow. Mr and Mrs WM Gorski, son and daughter returned from Joe's Pond camp.

Punishments may include discharge or suspension, with general orders to publish tonight. Leaders, including Patrolman John F. Melnnes, face major penalties as strike talks loom.
Peace settled over Coal District 18 in Charleston West Virginia as miners abandoned planned march into the county. Reports say locals followed leaders urging lawfulness. Governor Cornwell ordered an investigation summoning district mine officials to determine the cause of the agitation.
Reports confirm the death of three crew members from the US flagship of Admiral Hugh Redman after a fire aboard the vessel last night. Forty others are injured as responders battle the blaze under the direction of on scene fire chiefs.
The supreme council told Romania it must sign the peace treaty without reservations or abstain entirely. Premier Clemenceau chaired the session focusing on Germany and the disputed article 61 about Russian representation. In Bellows Falls on Westminster road a Ford runabout owned by AT Lynch of Headford and driven by Edward Varence of Pittsfield Massachusetts plunged down a bank after meeting another car. Both men escaped serious injury. Varence later hospitalized with internal injuries. The car was found stripped of spark plugs, carburetor, differential, wheels, tires and tools by 7 a.m. Investigating authorities found few clues for the thieves.
Funeral services for Charlee M. Howe, deacon of the Congregational church, were held at 4 o clock yesterday. The service at Barre drew many friends and relatives, with Rev. F L Goodspeed officiating and Frederick Inglis assisting. Burial followed in Gardiner Mays. the body rested at the A W Badger mortuary overnight. Accompanied by wife and children James and Marguerite, relatives attended from Newport and local families.
The referee in bankruptcy dismissed two cases from Barre involving Frank Stacey and Guilty Rossi for lack of prosecution. Rossi and Staney gain nothing from their actions. Alvin A. Wheeler seeks discharge. Notices set a creditors meeting for Grant Surgent's estate in the referee's office on Sept. 17.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Cave marked sixty years of marriage at their Barre home on Eastern Avenue yesterday. Family gathered including Frank F. Cave, T. H. Cave Jr., Lucy F. Sowden and daughters, and Philip Curtis of Sharon, Massachusetts. The couple wed in Montpelier sixty years ago by Rev. Macatm. They have lived in Barre for 30 years, with Mr. Cave previously running a printing office in town.
After two lean war years Barre's opera house renews activity with Nothing But Lies opening this Friday. Manager John Hoban has booked top road attractions including Flo Flo May Time Honolulu Girl and Million Dollar Doll along with comedies Take It From Me Parlor Bedroom and the rest. Also featuring Howe's pictures and Derro's Minstrels, the season promises a rich lineup for Barre audiences.
W L Ducharme of South Barre reports an Italian child about nine years old was run into by a car on upper South Main Street but suffered no injuries as the vehicle moved slowly. Edward Meininger of Barre backs into a Ford near Smith and Cumings market. Flora Heckley’s car hits a train on the Font Calais road with no damage. Preston Twombly of Orleans is fined $30 plus costs for driving Mrs H Kitredge’s auto without a license.
At the home of the officiating clergy Rev Join Troms in Williamsteven at p m Saturday Sept occurred the marriage of Miss Gladys Gauthier of Barre to William Eastman of Graniteville. The couple were attended by Mr and old Mrs Karl Hollenback of Barre. After the ceremony they left by automobile for Boston and vicinity. On their return they will reside in Graniteville.
William Starr of Pertistreet spent the end with relatives in North fold. Roderick Summers and Ida Abwir were operated on at City hospital Saturday for tonsils and adenoile. OW Raven of Boyes tailoring shop returned home in Malone after a four weeks' variation. Mrs. Marionline returned from fashion centers with Watts sand trimmings. Opening will be announced Inter-ady. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. lanamond of Coving Col started on their return journey this morning. For two weeks they visited with nieces Mrs. Will Dudley and Mra. B.C. Webster, of Barra. Mrs. A. A. Lamorey and brother James Hayes started for Mansfield O this morning. They plan two weeks with sister Mrs. F. W. Baterott, who moved from Barra two months ago. Mike Risamond Macks of Simumet street returned to Crane Institute of Music in Potedan NY. The inn was made by combs with her mother Mrs. Mary Maakie, brother stames, and schoolmate Miss Dorothy McDonald of Beecher Falls. Fred Hutelins sold his 155 acre farm in Willatmetown Merrill place to Howard Winchester and took in exchange the 61 acre farm owned by Winchester. The trade involved about 84,000 dollars through D. A. Perry agency. Fire Chief A. G. Preble rode Barre fire truck for first time after alarm Saturday at 4 o clock. The call came from 4 Ayersetrett, the house of Mrs. S. E. Spatfond, occupied by Harry MacNeil. A defective chimney caused smoke to pour into rooms, raising alarm. After examination, all clear. Firemen back at station ten minutes after call.
