A traveling representative and the European manager of Rice & Huntington Boston shoe makers have been seized in Moscow and held as spies by the military authorities, according to a consular dispatch to the state department.
Nearly 6,000 spectators watched the Vermont State Firemen's association muster in Rutland. Granite City Barre won the hose race with a 42 seconds run, close to the state record held by Rutland’s Baxters, while Salem New York’s Union No. 1 took the hand engine prize. Protests arose over hose handling but were not allowed as contests drew strong interest during the Rutland fair carnival.
A Ford car owned by Bert C Ware of Brattleboro veered off the West road to Speford Lake and overturned in a culvert, sending it down a bank. Bert C Ware suffered a broken ankle and minor injuries, while A Strester of Waterbury, visiting, sustained a skull fracture and minor injuries.
