New Haven Sept 5 Engineer August Miller of the White Mountain express and Charles H Murray flagman of the Bar Harbor express were arrested by Coroner Mix on charges of criminally causing the death of Royal Hotchkiss near North Haven. Bail set at 5000 each, in effect until Nov 24 after inquest verdict. Both detained as material witnesses. Miller aided by union groups, Murray aided by Friends of Murray as efforts to raise bail.
Fire gutted the Bulfinch Place Unitarian Church in Boston early today, one of the citys oldest structures. Estimated loss reaches 850000, with nearby guests at hotels in the West End evacuated amid the blaze.
Joseph G Burpee of St Green Street Brattleboro died yesterday after more than four years of illness from a severe shock. Born in Chesterfield in 1864 he was son of John W and Sam Burpee. He lived in Brattleboro since boyhood and earlier ran a chandlery business in Devry Ga. He served in Company J and is survived by a brother Fred W Burpee. Funeral Sunday at 2:30 PM.
In Tokio an ab attempt to assassinate Moritano Abe, a diplomatic official with the foreign office, was reported today. The attack wounded Abe in the abdomen and left authorities seeking details on the suspect and motive.
Lewiston Maine Sept 5 Fred Webster 82 of Farmington was fatally gorged by a mad bull at the state fair veterinary test night. He died after transfer to a hospital with little hope of recovery. Earlier that day a separate incident injured a young man from East Wilton Chester Hin and another spectator.
Muehlhausen Germany Sept 5 A teacher named Wagner who murdered his wife and four children at Dag erloch pesteriay set fire to the village in four places last night. Villagers shot eight men and wounded ten while trying to capture him. The man took refuge in a stable where he killed cattle and was overpowered after firing 250 cartridges. Enraged villagers beat him with clubs and pitchforks. he is expected to die.
Sheldon Junction Sept 5 Pickpockets thrived at the Sheldon fair and many losses were reported. Ayron H. Coombs of Enat Berkshire lost 20 dollars, John McFeeters of Easting dropped 90, Bracey of Fairfield 25, Sidn Fairfield 14, Elwin Ashton of Richt Shelton 20, Holland Bard of Morrisville 1, J. J. Harrett of St Albans 11, a man reported a missing item on the train, Hogash lost a roll of 117.
James B. Worthen born in Morrisville April 27 1808 son of Samuel and Filura Griswold Worthen married Janette Taylor September 4 1840. A longtime Central Vermont railroad conductor and hotel operator later ran businesses at Montpelier Thousand Islands Hammond and South Londonderry. After a October shock health declined. He died Sunday at 9 30 am. Funeral service led by Rev R D Crammer. Attending were relatives from Watertown Old Orchard and nearby towns.
The Photographers Association of America closed its convention in Paul Revere hall. W. F. Oliver of Talacnrille won the Partridge trophy lens. Elected officers include D. J. Bordeaux of Springfield as president and John Sahille of Providence as vice president, with Hastings of Newton as secretary and Partridge of Hos renaurer. Harrison Foster pleaded guilty to violating local liquor laws and received six months hard labor at Windsor. Arthur Hall was also found guilty of selling intoxicants and was ordered to serve six months in state prison. Sheriff HM Martin presided over the post trial proceedings.
A Vermont man, A. Rey Wheeler, 54, of Wilmington, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot at his brother’s home. A note indicates ill health caused the act and that he arranged his affairs, named his brother executor, and specified burial in Whitingham or Wilmington. Wheeler leaves six brothers and two sisters and planned to move his parents’ bodies to Wilmington. The funeral is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. in Southview cemetery.

George Rand pleaded guilty to four charges of larceny from the person in Burlington city court before Judge Palmer. Rand was sentenced to one year in Windsor state prison after being found to have taken a watch and $140 from Joseph Crowley at the Johnson stable on St Patt street while Crowley was away. Police investigations traced the missing property to Rand, who had recently arrived in the city with an exhibitor of trained horses.
The Grand Army hall hosted the annual Co G Sixth Vermont veterans reunion with 24 attendees including one muskets-shouldering participant. Measurements show Orange reservoir receives 375 000 gallons daily from weir readings, Nelson’s mill diverts 100 004, Little Stream yields 220 000, and Scott Brook 100 000 gallons. Five occupants of an East Barre Ford touring car were sideswiped and thrown into a road ditch after a passing incident with a Montpelier Maxwell on the main highway between Montpelier and Middlesex. None suffered broken bones though Mrs. Woodward had a severe forehead cut and all received bruises and minor injuries. The Maxwell and Ford sustained damage. all were treated at a Hill residence before returning home.
Bradford Sept four report of the third and fast day of the fair drawing about 241 spectators. Gentlemen’s drivers rode to a1 m, with FR. Kit trrdge of Woodsville N H winning one event. W. H usher of West Newbury won another race. The program lists multiple trotting and mixed classes with times and horse names such as Maud F, Colorado Belly, Elmdale, Alexander F, and Prince. Races ran into darkness, crowds lingered for finish.
Barre City Court quarterly report shows seventy six prosecutions for criminal offenses in Hare's municipal court from September 1. Fines and costs amount to 20420 with SOLS use paid into the state. Weather forecast predicts fair tonight and Saturday with light variable winds.
