George Schmidt, a popular Rutland aviator, died when his plane plunged during a routine flight from the Rutland fair. His mother had heard he planned to quit aviation after the fair. Witnesses say engine trouble and a sudden drop caused the wreck, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Schmidt, severely burned, was reported to have told his brother he did not know the cause.
