In St Johnsbury a carpenter Daniel Gibsom, 35, fell about 30 feet from a roof to a basement stair while working alone in a new house. A second accident saw Wret Elliott fall from a ravine top and taken to Bright Look Hospital with serious injuries as Dr Fitch prepared for an X ray to check for a broken bone.
Thunderstorm caused a lightning strike that destroyed the barn on George Connor’s Middlesex farm. The fire razed the structure, ruined this year’s hay and oats, and killed two pigs. Cardinal Giacomo della Chiesa, archbishop of Bologna, born in Pegli on November 21 1854, was elected pope succeeding Pope Pius X and choosing the name Benedict XV. He is the 267th pontiff, the first Italian Roman Catholic leader under 60 in years, with the sacred college containing 60 cardinals.
A wedding at the home of Mr and Mrs Robert Mitchell in Websterville joined Jean Harriet Mitchell and John W Gilliver of Concord New Hampshire in a single ring ceremony on the veranda. Rev Fred McNeill officiated. The couple, attended by Flora E Mitchell as maid of honor and John A Jamison as best man, received guests and post ceremony congratulations before a trip to Montreal and Thomand Islands. They will reside in Concord.
Elizabeth Smart daughter of Mr and Mrs Jaros Smart of 4 Glenwood avenue and John F Davidson of 1A Summer street were quietly married Tuesday night at 8 o'clock in Christchurch rectory Montpelier. The ceremony was performed by rector H A Flint with no guests present. They plan to reside on Glenwood avenue. The bride, a popular Barre young woman, studied at Goddard Seminary and worked in a dental office. Davidson, a tool sharpener, is known in athletic circles for his long connection with the Italian Athletic Club and the championship teams.
Miss Gladys Nye and Carl W Batchelder wed at the bride mother Nellie Nye’s home. Ex William Shaw conducted the single ring ceremony in the church's surroundings. Family and close friends attended, with Maude Plane and Clement Raichester among the notable guests. The couple plans a state tour after the ceremony.
James Hughes of Montpelier a 30 year granite industry hand polisher died at his Barre Street home from tuberculosis. Born January 14, 1865 in Keeseville New York he leaves a wife seven children five sisters and four brothers. Funeral from St Augustine's Church Montpelier Friday at 9 o'clock. He belonged to the New England Order of Protection and the granite workers union.
Miss Ella Comstock returns from ten days at Lake Champlain. Mrs Lauter Gaylord of Waitfield attends a fall term gathering with Miss Atwood of Woodstock. Wood and neighbors attend a village social. The Hobden’s Hall gathering drew a good crowd for the district school examination. Family visits from Worcester and Wickham noted. A motorcar ride finishes the day as Mrs epee and her party tour.
