The Cymric reports no sign of the Volturno near the disaster area after circling the scene. Survivors describe panic and cowardice aboard the Volturno with boats overturned and many drowned, while crews abandoned passengers amid explosions.
About 100 Volturno survivors arrive in New York aboard the Grosser Kurfurst after the ship burned and sank following an explosion. Officers and crew aboard the Volturno, including Second Officer Lloyd, are lauded for bravery in saving others as lifeboats were launched amid heavy seas.
The steamer Kroonland with Captain Inch aboard is expected to dock in New York this afternoon carrying ninety one survivors from the ill fated voyage. The Seydlitz from Bremen is due in Philadelphia today with forty survivors onboard.
Leslie Young returns from New port Row on business trips. A social will be held by the Rekidinavian Brotherhood at Worthen Hall Saturday with baskets. Apple and pear sales advertised for Hinsdale delivery. Auction planned for Carl Stewl real estate near Worcester.
In Indianapolis a clash between union and non union railway workers wounded one man fatally and another seriously. Police reserves failed to stop the riot for over an hour as twelve arrests followed a fight in the business district after months of organizing efforts.
A destructive gale swept the coast from Cape Cod to nearby areas causing multiple wrecks. Two coal barges were added to the list of wrecks with the J B barges crew missing or presumed dead after the disaster overnight.
Agnes Hulburd and Walter Conger wed at the bride’s home in Mount Vernon in a ceremony led by Rev. W. Re Mamtin. The couple, with a large gathering of family and friends, exchanged vows as bridesmaids, a maid of honor, and a ring bearer participated.

Morrisville October 10 The 100th anniversary of Mount Vernon lodge No charter was granted celebration featured a parade led by Stowe Military band 30 Knights Templar and masons from area lodges. A Congregational church program included addresses and music with guests Grand Master Eugene Weston Grand Secretary EL Ros and other officials in attendance. A 16 member delegation from Towle Hardwick attended.
Washington reports Representative Underwood of Alabama expunged from his Tuesday speech a claim that Thomas F. Ryan of New York funded Woodrow Wilson’s gubernatorial campaign. In Burlington the $20,000 malicious prosecution suit involving FH Moore against Kenton of the University of Vermont progressed slowly amid numerous legal questions. The suit alleges Moore’s arrest for selling whiskey from a drug store harmed his medical direction role after a student incident. defendants deny malice and argue legal standards were misapplied. The Congregational Ministerial Education annual meeting elected officers in Montpelier and set the next gathering for November 17. Ane Boring of Bethel, recently operated on, is en route to City Hospital for further care.
Elwin Le Peck, a section foreman on the Central Vermont line, was seriously injured when a handcar ran over him near Nutting bridge in Font Werk. He lay at his Richford home with a broken back, deteriorating after initial treatment by Drs. Woodburn and Landerville.
Burlington reports that college students on the Vermont campus voted unanimously to bar dances at college functions. The student council, backed by the faculty, will oversee enforcement limiting dances including turkey trot and one step, as part of a broader effort to control student social life.
Goth Lillie M Wheeler and Martin C Wheeler of Calais seek divorce in Wallingford county court. The former accuses intolerable severity. the latter sues for alleged adultery. Testimony described heated disputes with a hot dish thrown, flapjacks used as missiles, and Wheeler locking out or removing his wife’s clothes while neighbors testified about overheard conversations.
The Vermont Supreme Court in Montpelier concluded its October term with final arguments in the Bondi hunting case and the Tisonae matter. It affirmed the judgment in Frattini versus Spinetti for trespass and reversed the judgment in McCarthy administrator versus Village of Northfield. The Alfreds case from Franklin County was marked for continuance.
Funeral services for George Hutchins were held in South Duxbury with burial at North Duxbury Cemetery. A J Huntley of Morrisville officiated. Pallbearers included Ray Hutching Walter Brown Myrna Hutchine. Interment followed at the North Duxbury cemetery as many relatives and friends attended from nearby towns.
Two bankruptcy petitions filed in Aintland on October 1 name Charles M. Tnd a farmer with liabilities of 5005 and assets of 82085, with 525 exempt, and Mitchell Leonard, also a farmer with liabilities of 50 and assets of 5206, with 5107 exempt.
Nearly 200 members and guests attended a reception for the Piret Baptist church choir hosted by the Baraca class and Sunday attendees. Rev George Holt welcomed all, Ethel Inglis assisted, and Violet Scott read. The program featured Musical Name with a Robin Adair arrangement, a ladies quartet, and a Holt vocal solo, followed by refreshments as decorations graced church parlors.
A largely attended Barre Golf Club meeting at the clubhouse elected officers for the coming year led by President George M. Marrion and Vice President E M Roscoe. The treasurer reported full membership and healthy finances. The club voted to rejoin the Vermont State Golf Association and to hold a year end banquet with prize presentations by November 1.
Lydia Maude Gray daughter of Mrs. Marte Gray of South Barre wed Archie W Taft son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Taft at 40 Washington Street in South Barre. The ceremony led by Rev. J W Barnett featured an evergreen arch and a wedding bell. The couple exited for a two week bridal trip through Massachusetts before settling at 40 Washington Street Barre.
Waterbury residents Mark Simn Judd and Ruth Marie Davis united in marriage at 5 o'clock east of Barre. The ceremony was conducted by Hen. B. Heardon. Vermont Master Bakers Convention in Burlington drew attendees and included a parade and related events.
After 11 witnesses, Judge T W Scott freed the woman charged and returned property to owner. A half barrel of Highland Spring ale was ordered returned to 23 Railroad Street. The defendant was bound over in 500 for Washington county court. The case centered on alleged alcohol sales at a Railroad Street home and featured multiple residents denying involvement and recounting visits.
A corn laden freight car derailed south of Montpelier Junction on the Central Vermont line, blocking the main track for hours. Extra freight 767 shifted, one truck dropped, end settled on the rails, delaying passenger service. A wreck crew cleared the track in about an hour with Conductor Guy and Engineer Burton in charge.
Prof H A Honline concludes work in Montpelier and opens a series of lectures in Barre at 4 pm in the Methodist church on child culture. A second lecture is at 8 pm with further talks planned Friday. A collection will help defray expenses as attendees praise the specialist. Overcast with rain and northeast winds expected tonight and Friday.
