In Muskogee Oklahoma on November 20 a hatchet murderer claimed two senior business victims LB. F. Richardson a furniture dealer was slain on Thursday and C. S. Everett a nearby grocer was killed last night. Both bodies were mutilated and no clues surfaced.
Rain forecast for the annual Army versus Navy clash at the Polo Grounds as 42000 spectators are set to attend. President Wilson and two daughters are among the attendees. Bets heavily favored the Navy at about two to one. Navy's bright gold lace uniforms contrast with the Army mule in plain attire prepared for the show.
President Wilson and party arrived in New York on a wet night, late train, to attend the Army Navy game at the Polo Grounds. He came for amusement alone and will not speak, observing the contest with no public remarks.
Washington reports that diamond and precious stone imports into the United States reached a peak in calendar year 1913, with total values near 67 million dollars. Nine months through September show a 30 percent excess of prior records, including about two percent imitations.
Ten thousand rounds of rifle and revolver ammunition were seized aboard the steamer Seminole at her New York pier as she prepared to sail for Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Washington D C Nov 20 The 4th annual NAWSA convention opens with debate over a proposed 10 cent member tax to fund the national body and criticism from independent state groups. A move to relocate headquarters from New York to Washington also surfaces as suffragists plan a capital campaign.
In Dublin on November 20 the Unionist leaders Andrew B Law Sir Edward Carson and others arrived to address the home rule issue. Law argued for complete separation of the United Kingdom and pressed the government to seek Sanction from the New before any change. Suffragettes attempted to reach Law during his drive to Lord Iveagh’s residence and were stopped. Mrs Skeffington and Mrs Connery were arrested for obstructing police.
A Franklin County coroner's jury exonerated Lealie Bush, the Philadelphia pitcher, in the death of Louis T. Miller who was struck by Bush's automobile. The panel ruled Miller’s death unavoidable and purely accidental with no blame on Bush. Artie Tutfman, formerly tied to a drug aid for San Francisco in the Coast league, was mentioned in context.
A fiery explosion in a Grand Rapids Mish hardware building injures and burns more than twenty people and traps several as dynamite, powder, and gasoline detonated amid a blaze in the eastern business section. Debris scattered over four blocks, women and children trampled, many left to endure exposure in cold. Monetary losses likely exceed $10,000 with damage assessment underway.
Riots continued through the night in Yahorn Alsace Germany as townspeople clashed with the German army. Officials report numerous arrests and violent incidents, prompting troops to be ordered to guard the main street and detain several civilians and officials.
Washington Nov 21 treasury department orders collectors of internal revenue modify income tax rules on bonds and similar obligations. Collecting agents may attach their own certificates to interest coupons instead of owner certificates to avoid publicity. Original owner certificates go to the treasury. Other changes extend to March 31 1914 the requirement to indicate the number of bonds detaching coupons and extend to Jan 15 1914 the use of forms for foreign coupon holders. Secretary McAdoo says banks reported credit restrictions to meet new provisions and treasury resources will aid banks once the law is enacted.
In Chicago on November 23 the high priest of the Mardezman cult, Havish, was found guilty by a federal jury of sending objectionable literature in violation of interstate laws. He faces up to five years in prison or a fine up to 10000. The case centered on a textbook promoting sun worship and sexual Harvest style remedies.
Newport reports three men injured in a Coventry road crash near Mrs. B. N. Clark’s residence. William Fuller, O D A Brahana, and Sheriff E J Hill with R X Baldwin were returning from Maroon Ville, P Q with Peter Phillips. Steering gear broke, car went off a five foot bank, occupants ejected. Baldwin broke leg, Fuller fractured ribs, Brahana unconscious. All taken to Hotel Raymond for care.
A girl fainted during a robbery in which the suspects seized 2000 dollars in cash. Police report indicates the crime occurred in a public area and officers are reviewing surveillance for clues. No further injuries reported.
In Schenectady New York three robbers waylaid a party including Cornelius Doremus president of Germania Life Insurance Co and a young woman. They fled after taking money and jewels valued around 20000 containing two rings and a watch. Chauffeur and others were assaulted but no long injuries reported. The bandits disappeared into brush near Pelham Park and police found no trace. A conference with officials and union leaders followed amid labor unrest. further talks were scheduled to resolve strike issues and return to work.
William C Russell aged about 66, a central figure in the Russell will contest, died in Melrose Mass. He had earlier contested heirs to the estate of his ancestor. The case involved claims by Dakota Dan from Dickinson North Dakota and Fresno Dan from California who were labeled impostors by the courts. The appeal over the impostor ruling continues in court.
Arietta Downer Downer, a Milford born widow of Rey Burns Downer, died after a cancer battle. Survived by her son Rowden and grandson John Henry Diener. Funeral held at 2 pm with Rev. M Redstone officiating at Methdist church. Interment in Grasville cemetery. Bearers included George Bustell Reuben Downer and Lente Dumas.
The Vermont State Orange Patrons of Husbandry sub session will be held in Rutland at Shriners temple on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday December 10 11 and following. The program includes opening of the grange in fifth degree committee reports resolutions without debate officer reports third and fourth degree exemplification by Middlebury grange 315 credential and division of labor reports master’s address and election of two executive committeemen. The lecturer’s conference and speakers include K B Hallett Richard Potter Thomas Radlee and Governor Fluther. The grange opens in sixth degree and business includes reports on resolutions good of the order cooperation transportation publications agriculture amendments by laws and grievances.
Bellows Falls November 29 The locomotive on an extra freight derailed at the station end of the platform and blocked the Connecticut and Passumpsic division of the Boston and Maine until 1 45 in the afternoon. Trackman Pameste Sonata was thrown but escaped with a foot injury and ran 100 yards before realizing the locomotive was missing. Trains were diverted via Keene and South Vernon while a marshalling of cars occurred at Bellows Falls yard.
Washington reports Dr. Wiley, famed for pure food reform, says he would not accept the New York health commissioner post unless offered as a duty to the public. He notes no offer has been made and opposes forcing Mayor Fleet Mitchel to join his cabinet.
Perley Champney, driving a team for George F. Newnan, narrowly escaped death when a Boston flyer struck his wagon at a land street crossing near Keene. The wagon was demolished and the horses were wounded, but Champney was thrown against a pole and clung to the reins as the engine struck, pulling him clear. He suffered bruises but escaped serious injury.
United States District Attorney Robert T. Whitehoten spoke briefly about the abduction investigation centered on Tals Viper of Pairfield salts. Schmidt of Basten provided limited statements, and Whitehoten indicated he would not discuss further details as the case progresses with his office handling the matter.
Milwaukee Wis Nov 20 The deer hunting season this year shows the highest death toll on record with 22 hunters killed and 23 injured as reports up to today. The season is set to close tomorrow.
The 1914 deer hunting season ends amid a split over closing time. Some say the legal limit is 5 pm today while others insist 4 pm Monday. section 13 of the fish and game laws indicates deer may be taken from November 10 to December 1 after 6 am and before 5 pm on both dates. Officials and legal scholars largely support the 6 pm Monday deadline. Snowfall boosted weary hunters, but overall deer harvest for 1913 is unlikely to approach prior years, with only a few locals reporting successful kills.
Windsor November 20 Judge Vadyar Short min celebrated his 70th birthday yesterday at his West Windsor farm. He and his wife, in good health, will spend the winter at the farm near his childhood home. Born in Weathersfield, he is noted as one of the valley's prominent farmers. The Chesterfield house is brick and well kept.
Johnstry reports Gypsy Phillips sought for assault and a weeklong chase across two counties. Caught near Masonville, P Q, he surrendered after a weary fugitive ordeal, traded revolver for an overcoat, and was brought to St Johnsbury by Sheriff Warthen. His wife and six children remain in fear as Miles Tips is noted as wounded.
Newport reports Peter Philips of Walden was detained after crossing from Canada on an assault charge involving Miles of Walden. Sheriff War jthen located him near Knowlton's Landing, Que. Canadian officers arrested Philips and he was deported to Mausimville, where authorities ordered removal. Willian Westover, sought for burglary in East Charleston, was captured after fleeing to Canada and returned to the county jail here.
Stockholders of the consolidated Barre and Chelsea railroad held their annual meeting at the office in Barre Topnotch wire thin forenoon. Morris McDonald was elected president, with H E Folsom and other officers named, as the Barre line gains authority to operate merge or consolidate with East Barre and Chelsea Railroad, though no immediate extension toward Cholera was reported.
At meetings in St Alana on November 2, directors of Central Vermont Transportation Co Southern New England Railway Co and Southern New England Railroad Corp elected E C Smith to lead the Central Vermont Railway Co and named him president of the other entities. E J Chamberlin of Montreal remains chairman of the board.
Mrs H B Wilson of Malone New York died at City hospital this morning after an operation for peritonitis performed yesterday Her husband Mr Wilson was stricken on Thanksgiving Day Relatives were notified and the remains will be sent by late afternoon train to Blenneburg New York for funeral services likely Monday Interment to follow in Blenneburg
Lyndonville November 20 Rev John C Stephenson of East Berkshire has accepted a call to St Peter's church and will assume duties December 1. He is a New York City native educated at the College of the City of New York and has served as rector at St Peter's church Tay Sli and St Luke's Episcopal in Vermont since 1910. He was married in March to Miss Patelopte L.
