British forces report advancement near Ancre with success from Beaumont-Hame and Beaucourt sectors. Official dispatch says German lines were pushed back last night as attacks continued in the northeast and north sectors.
British forces report gains northeast of Beaumont Hamel and north of Beaucourt as Haig’s offensive advances north of the Ancre. Germans counter with artillery as they shell Tenemont and Hebuterne. Serbians push toward Monastir from the Cerna river basin while French forces reach Kunena’s outskirts, five miles from Monastir.
London reports further spirited fighting in the German East Africa campaign. British forces succeeded after a German attack on Nigomini, which moved southwest to besiege Malangali. The British column arrived, repulsed the besiegers, and killed and captured several, taking booty.
Rome Nov. 18 the Italian government joins with other entanta suitors in protesting a plan to declare Russian Poland or an independent state. Premier Roselli sent a telegram of protest to Premier Sturmer of Russia.
A Swiss paper reports a new peace rumor suggesting neutrals may join a joint conference with the belligerents. The note claims several European neutrals are already in contact with the American government and that negotiations for a peace conference have begun.
The Hague reports up to 40 000 Helgians deported to Germany with about 2 000 daily, Antwerp asked to supply 27 000 men. Belgian popu lation fears terror as trains pull away, women at rails, men forced into cattle cars. Deported workers face offers of wages and remittance rights with threats of harsher treatment if they refuse to sign, aiming to fill skilled labor needs.
Petrograd reports via London that Russian forces near Sarny southeast of Pinsk captured a large Zeppelin airship. The crew of 16 men was taken prisoner.
Bucharest reports through London that Romanians have advanced on the Transylvania front near Dragoslavele. The war office states notable progress in the Dragoslavele region as of November 18.
London reports Turon Rurian met Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg in Berlin to discuss U S relations and the submarine war. A verbal warning cited Wilson’s patience nearing exhaustion as the issue looms of continuing or modifying the campaign. Also notes William B Stickney elected president of the New England Federation of Harvard Clubs in Boston. Germany endures winter with snowbound trains near the Swiss frontier.
A town hall event hosted by Mrs Adelin Nelson and Vera Torker aims to raise funds for the local school. The Kimball Corner School plans Friday evening entertainment on November 24 to benefit the school program. Proceeds will buy classroom supplies as residents attend with families.

The body of James Mudgett aged 58 was found three miles from Richford near Lavid's farm in Berkshire after being dragged by a Central Vermont train from St Albans. He left behind a mother Mrs James Mudgett and siblings including Mrs Stephen ImpY Boston, Mrs Charis Taslow, Miss Ole Mudgett, and Miss Nettie Mudgett, plus a son Howard. The incident occurred late last night and authorities were notified today.

A joint meeting at Berwick brought together officials from the state tuberculosis hospital committee and the Vermont Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis to plan legislative recommendations. Attendees included Dr. John Blodgett, Dr. C. F. Dalton, Dr. S. Cuverly, Frank Howe, F. C. Martin, and S. Hultlater Jackson. The group sought better cooperation and future actions to stamp out tuberculosis.
Funeral for Mrs Paul Wilfore of 215 South Main was held at the home on Tuesday forenoon with Rev. Edgar Crosland of Pirot Presbyterian church officiating. Attendants included Frank St. John Williamstown Orville Bussey South Barre Edward Venner and Arthur Cota. Interment followed at Hope cemetery.

Arthur Gibson of Miancheater New Hampshire, wounded in the hip while hunting near Essex Center, was discovered by Walter Webster. Clarence Starrett of Lynn Massachusetts was badly wounded when a life bullet struck his abdomen during deer hunting near Plymouth. He was rushed to Mary Hitchcock hospital in Hanover New Hampshire with the bullet tearing tissue and injuring a kidney. Starrett, who summers at Plymouth Corners, attempted to place his gun in a wagon and the hammer discharged as he grabbed the rifle. He was not accustomed to firearms.
Harry M. Hardwick of Malden Massachusetts, treasurer of the Boston Ice Cream and Mohawk Dairy companies, was killed by an accidental discharge at a hunting camp near First Competiout Lake about forty miles from Inlobrook. His companions, in an adjoining room when the shot fired, found him dead and believed the shooting an accident.
Fish and Game Commissioner Titcomb cites only 64 deer killed in the first three days of the open season in Lyndonville and nearby counties. Four does were reported killed by wardens, with snow deep in southern counties hindering hunts. Washington county leads with 19 deer, while other towns report small totals and many reports are still coming in.

Isaac D Bemis, 75, died Friday at Brightlock Hospital after an operation. A native of London Center born September 1 1841, he lived in Willoughby and East Burke, worked as a dry goods merchant in East Burke for 17 years, served briefly in the state legislature, and was a longtime M E church steward. He leaves two daughters, a brother, and a sister.

Barre aldermen heard Central Power corporation propose supplying Barre manufacturing with 1.7 cents per kilowatt, replacing 2 cents, with no minimum charge. Plans include a 32 mile transmission from East Middlebury waterfalls, crossing multiple towns and lines along South Barre to James Bros plant, contingent on PSC charter amendments for lighting services.
