The giant seaplane NC-4 completed a historic flight by landing in Plymouth harbor this afternoon after a stop in Ferrol Spain. The crew successfully concluded the long voyage from the Spanish city delivering a notable achievement for American aviation.
The NC-4, piloted by Lieutenant-Commander Albert C Read, finished the trans Atlantic flight with a 500 mile hop from Ferrol to Plymouth. The time reported by Vice Admiral Knapp suggested slower speed than earlier legs, and Read’s crew will proceed toward Paris to brief officers at the aviation conference.
In Paria on May 31 President Wilson, awaiting the plenary session at 3 pm for the reading of Austria’s peace treaty, met several visitors including Senator Peter G. Gerry of Rhode Island. The council of four did not meet, while the Jugo-Slav delegation and the American group discussed the Adriatic question with no decision reached.
Berlin May 30 Count Von Bernstorff former German ambassador in Washington commented on a Paris report that Brockdorff Rantzau would be easier to sign the peace treaty than others. He said no German would attach his name to a document like a death sentence for the fatherland and urged peaceful opponents to seek an amendment of the treaty's stipulations.
Paris on May 31 reports one aviator killed and another mortally wounded when a plane plunged about 200 feet at Issy les Moulineaux. The deceased was Weilby Jourdan once a mechanic for the famed Ace Nungesser. Effor sustained fatal injuries.
Rome May 30 Dr Jose Vicente Concha former president of Colombia presented credentials as minister to the Vatican and was received by Pope Benedict in a lengthy audience. He later visited Cardinal Gasparri papal secretary of state.
The steamer Louisville reached New York today from Brest with 1,807 troops aboard. Among the units were company D of the 11th Ammunition Train Ath division, company C of the Silat engineers, several photo sections, evacuation and mobile hospital detachments, and air squadrons including the 22d 28th 100th and 21 aero squadrons.
German newspapers accuse the Entente of withholding full peace terms. They cite the German League of Nations Union as publishing a complete text in German French and English with a map of ceded territory. Censorship allegedly hides German replies and notes to influence public judgment.
Major General William C. Gorgas former surgeon general and head of the American yellow fever commission arrived in Panama with his party from Guayaquil Ecuador. Fifteen youths assaulted keeper Thomas Downs and escaped from the Randall’s Island reformatory in New York. A northbound freight train of 14 cars derailed four miles south of Milton at 4 this morning. Conductor B L McCarton and Engineer Harry Palmer led the train. no injuries reported. A wrecking crew arrived and trains were detoured via Albury and Burlington.
In a sparsely attended 1919 meeting Barre citizens approved a memorial to soldiers and sailors and authorized up to 860,000 in bonds. They also authorized 37,000 in bonds to cover debts, 20,000 in notes for tax anticipation, and set aside three cents to support the evening drawing school. The gathering endorsed a Wilson proclamation urging Boy Scout Week and a campaign to gain one million associate members.
The funeral for W C Hanson, who died at City hospital Monday night, was held Thursday at 2 pm at A W Badger & Co chapel. Hon J B Reardon led services. A large crowd attended including Spanish American War veterans and Knights of Pythias. At Hope Cemetery, Knights of Pythias and veterans paid their tributes, with four pallbearers from Knights of Pythias and two wartime veterans among the mourners. Floral offerings from M & W freight office employees, lodges, orders, and friends decorated the grave.
The 83rd annual Washington County Association of Congregational Churches convenes in Warren on June 5 at 10 a.m. with sermons and addresses by W A Remele, C V Woodbury, J H Pattee, G H Gutterson, and others. Haviok DeForge was jailed in Washi county awaiting trial on forgery charges after waiving examination before Justice C. C. Graves. He allegedly broke into Union Granite’s office, stole blank checks, signed them, and attempted to cash them in Waterbury and Barre totaling about 75 dollars. Named forged signatures include Frank Eaton Fred Eaton and Mr Perkins. Some checks cashed by local firms. bank records show crude forgeries and a signature mismatch with Frank Eaton.
The Washington county grand jury is summoned to meet on Thursday, June 5, at Se. Public details are sparse but the session is believed to focus on the Broadwell homicide in Barre where Mrs. Lucina Broadwell was strangled four weeks ago. Investigative steps have shifted recently in preparation for possible indictment.
Mrs John B Magnaghi died at 7 pm after complications from influenza. Angelina Catto Magnaghi, born in Breno Italy in 1801, resided in Barre before marriage to John B Magnaghi on June 20 1916. She is survived by her husband, mother Antoinette Catto of Milano, Italy, sister Mrs Louis Bini, and brothers Louis Catto Milford MA and Michael Catto Milano. Funeral from the home Monday at 2 o'clock.
A Barre Vermont Memorial Day program honors Civil War veterans, with Rev. B G Lipsky delivering a reflective address on national unity and peace. The parade rout moved from Depot Square to Elmwood Cemetery, where veterans from Civil War and Spanish American War ages attended, followed by ceremonies at City Hall with readings of Gettysburg Address and patriotic music.
