Paris May 28. The Germans launched three attacks last night and this morning in Champagne and all were repulsed. They bombarded French positions around Dead Man's Hill and on the Verdun front. A French detachment penetrated to the second German line in Alsace finding many dead in the trenches.
May 28 report says Italian forces advancing north of Gorisia pierce positions between Jamaina and the Gulf of Trieste. They push past Montefalcone Duine railway near San Giovanni and move within two miles of Duine and Medeasta. They seize hill 145 and Pal leva headworks, link Mont Cuoco Lines to hill 463, and take over 1200 prisoners with large guns captured.
Italians crossed the Tolmino river and occupied a village northwest of Dudino near the Gulf of Trieste. They also captured nine six inch guns. Berlin reported French troops south of Moronvilliers in Champagne with more than 250 prisoners.
An official statement from Jondon England dated May 28 reports that with American troops in French and British forces and extra units ordered to France, there will soon be a force of one hundred thousand Americans in France.
London May 28 dispatch reports an Austrian official statement declaring a complete repulse of all Italian attacks after furious fighting. The note claims 14000 unwounded Italians have been captured in the last sixteen days.

Orleans May 28 Leslie White and John Olton of East Trownington escaped with minor injuries after a motorcycle turned a sharp curve and collided with an automobile. White suffered a distorted ankle and two broken hand bones while Olton sustained injuries described as internal road of Willoughby like. Both machines were badly damaged and the pair were sent home.
A Brazilian paper says German circles expect Germany to declare war on Brazil within days. The foreign relations committee in Congress drafted a measure to cancel the April 25 1917 neutrality decree and authorize the president to take steps ending neutrality. Nursingtom May 28 A new smallpox case was reported to Dr F Dale ton secretary of the Vermont state board of health. Eugene Root age about 25 traveled from Richford to East Berkshire where he was diagnosed as ill and quarantined in an isolated house two miles from the village. His family in Richford was quarantined and Dr H E A Lada investigated possible additional cases but none were confirmed.
L CASSIS FUNERAL Granite workers paid tribute to Louis Cassis at his home and later at a funeral service. The procession marched to the cemetery after a brief service, with several named mourners and attendees noted in the report.
Forrest E. Goodall, a 56 year old Barre granite cutter living at 34 Hill Street, died by drinking carbolic acid after learning another man had been hired at Burnham's meadow. A note to Mrs Weet indicated his wish to end it all. The body was found by his housekeeper, Mrs Laura West, in an abandoned henhouse. Dr. Woodruff and officials ruled it suicide. He leaves two children and had lived in Barre since moving from New Hampshire. Funeral at 2 PM Tuesday at 34 Hill Street, Rev. Lipaky to officiate. burial in Hope Cemetery.
The Barre area launches a state Red Cross drive to enlist 30,000 members in Vermont by week’s end. A tent station in City Square will collect enrollments as clerks and clergy urge support, with memberships ranging from annual to life gifts.
