German forces renew action along a 40 mile front between Rheims and Soissons and also in Flanders as British and French troops hold the former line toward Paris. Paris reports Allied resistance with their usual valor amid heavy combat and counterattacks.
German forces resume pressure on the western front with a southern thrust spanning about 40 miles between Rheims and Soissons and a northern push near the Lys, seeking to sever the British line and threaten Paris. She is survived by her mother Mrs Mia Knapp two sisters Miss Dor k and Lara Krupp and four brothers Herbert Neil Lester and Fou. Funeral service Tuesday at 2 PM at the house with Rev A W Hewitt officiating. burial in village cemetery.
Joaquin Gomez and Alfonso Guturez were arrested for breach of the peace after a street fight in Addison Street. Victor Oxsell, a Spaulding High School graduate and Northfield military college student, passed naval academy exams at Annapolis per Senator Dillingham. An exhibit of student drawings and models will be displayed this week at the downtown drawing school building with viewing hours each day and tuition refunds for qualifying students.
The American and British defense near Luce valley and St Quentin front is celebrated as eleven American officers and four privates receive the British Distinguished Service Order and other honors. Colonel J N Hodis led American engineers under Major General Omre, with Captain Henry Galstorm and lieutenants B ern y Eyana and others cited for courage during the German breakthrough on February 2. Private soldiers Buckle Parkins Gibson Meketts Terrill among those commended for extinguishing a burning munition car at risk to themselves.
Plainfield May 27 The Red Cross drive drew a large crowd for an evening of entertainment headlined by Singbad the Sailor. H D Hopkins of Montpelier spoke on Washington county Red Cross work, with readings from Robert Service and piano solos by Mrs Ellan Nye Lawrence. The event featured Gladys Tryte and Mrs Ernest Botehelder of Barre, a Montpelier seminary quartet, and music by the Marshfield band. An 11 o clock address by Mr Simonds closed the program, followed by a dinner and afternoon auctions of flowers and goods. Committees earned praise for their united effort in the war drive.
Mrs Anna E McGue wife of the late Migue died in her room on North Mats Street Sunday night at 10 after years of illness. She is survived by three daughters Mrs Billa LaBell of New Haven Conn Mrs Elizabeth P Lagar and Miss Anis U L Metler of Barre and her son John B Mefoe of Holyoke Mass Two grandchildren Harold Latell of New Haven and Mrs Mildred Fo Metine of Barre The deceased was born in Monahan Ireland April 6 1837 and had lived in Barre for nineteen years coming from St Athans Ireland The funeral service will be in Monsans Church with burial at Cushette cemetery in Pak bey tree.

Mrs. Elvira Harbin Scott widow of the late ost and mother of State Treasurer Walter F. Scott died Sunday morning at age 83. A native of Barre, she will be buried in Elmwood Cemetery after services in Brandon. She leaves four sons Walter F. Scott Gerry Scott of Brandon Willis G. Scott and Harry Scott. Sister Miss Ardelia Harrington and brother Jos Harrington reside in South Barre.
Miss Kathryn Jane Abern and Mason O Pierce wed at the home of the bride Saturday afternoon with few guests. Rev TL Reardon presided at the Universal church ceremony. After the ceremony the couple planned to reside east of town, with Kathryn employed at National Lithograph Insurance Co.
A church service at the Church of the Good Shepherd dedicated a 20 star flag honoring parishioners serving in the war. The rector Rev W J M Beattie preached a patriotic sermon. Names read aloud and flag-raising followed, with prayers for safety and a recessional to See the Home Fires Burning.
Pre Memorial Sunday observances in Barre honored Civil War veterans from RB Crandall Post GA and related groups. A large crowd heard BG Lipsky’s sermon on The Spirit of the Hope of the Sixties, linking 1861 memories with modern war anxieties and the fight for liberty.
