May 27 report says despite no official motion, naval observers fear a clash between Japanese and Russian fleets under Rodjestvensky in the Korean strait. The Vladivostok squadron is said to have left its safe harbor, raising belief a major battle may be imminent within hours.
A Telegram dispatch reports a section of the Russian fleet near the Teushima and Korean straits. Biko Deepatch notes Rodjestvensky is said to be off Tsushima. May 27, Tokyo telegram cited.
Washington reports a private ad is received claiming more than nine vessels, including three battle ships and three cruisers, are off Saddle Sea sixty miles southeast of Shang Ti. The ships are believed to be a convoy to colliers and parts, with detachments expected for an engagement with Togo.
May 27 report from Warsaw says rioting has ended as authorities tighten grip under martial law. The city stays under strong military presence with no further unrest expected beyond the current crackdown.

The annual Vermont Domestic Missionary Society and Woman's Home Missionary Union convention will convene at Canter Congregational Church in Barre. The first session Tuesday afternoon will feature the annual report by John M. Comstock and a sermon by Rev. F. A. Yoole.
Surlington on May 27 reports Kamunt Lar geque and a companion located in South Hero and returning home this afternoon after being abducted Wednesday. They were employed there by a tenent.
G J Dwinell and G Tucker spent three days at the Swerdfeger Tucker camp in Greensboro and many locals report notable catches in Caspian Lake. Will Pike weighed heavy at 25 inches in length, while Gilbert Dennelle claims a large catch. Memorial services are planned at the M B church next Sunday with Rev Brows to preach to veterans.
A raft loaded with dynamite aimed at the Pennsylvania railroad draw bridge over the Hackensack river failed to reach the span after striking a hidden log. An explosion occurred, but no one was harmed as the raft was diverted and did not threaten the passing train. A series of threatening letters had warned President Caswitt and others of further attempts.

Next week observances run daily during Ascension Week at the Church of the Good Shepherd with Rogation Day litany and addresses on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 pm. Ascension Day services include Holy Communion at 7 am and 10 30 am, Evening Prayer and sermon at 7 pm.

Burlington May 27 Vermont won the intercollegiate debate held at College Street Church on the question Should the United States Maintain a Policy of Debbest Expansion. Bates College and the University of Vermont contested with Bates-W. W. James Merrill and O. M. Sl forming the affirmative against Vermont’s Perry Stone and Ter King. Speeches were timed at five minutes with twelve Balestien allowed per side. Judge K. C. Mower presided as Bucklin opened and introduced the speakers.
The body of an infant was discovered in a tin box on the outskirts of Hardwick May 27. Authorities report the infant was buried, with no clues about the mother or the person who placed the body there.
An eleven year old Highland Avenue boy was sent to buy fresh strawberries. He inspected crates at a Main street store, found them unsatisfactory, and asked for fresh berries. A clerk replied they sold salted fruit, prompting the boy to remark that salt would be needed to keep them. He then left for another grocery.
