The German government informs France it has adopted extreme measures to seal the frontier with Upper Silesia to prevent military activity. The move signals intends to curb cross-border troop movements and restrict operations along the disputed area.
Premier Briand told deputies there is no reason to occupy the Rhine while noting the Silesia question’s change. He warned that occupying the Ruhr without allied support would abandon the Versailles treaty and risk reprisals. Germany had already tightened the Silesian frontier in response to French notes.
In Hoston on May 24, arguments on Charles Ponzi’s petition for habeas corpus to stop his state court trial on larceny charges from investors while he remains a federal prisoner were set for tomorrow by Federal Judge Morton after a conference. Wredes H. Wells of Burlington died in New York City after a brief illness described as sleeping sickness. He traveled from Burlington to New York and Atlantic City, consulted physicians, and died early Saturday morning. Wells, 40, was the last surviving member of a large family, held in public service, and long employed by the firm Beard, Whitney, View and Henry. He was a longtime member of local historical and social organizations and left a widow, Mrs. Wells.
Boston authorities launched a formal inquiry into the death of Paton C. McGilvary, a former overseas flyer. Mrs Alfred C Chase died at her Northfield Center home after a long illness with pneumonia. Born Rosie M Judd in Northfield 85 years ago she married Alfred C Chase about 44 years ago and spent most of her life here. Surviving are daughter Nellie Mosley and others. Funeral Thursday at 2 PM from the home conducted by Rev Paddock with burial in Kimwood Cemetery.
Funeral services for Dr HAL Whitney were held in Northfield on Monday afternoon with the Dewitt Clinton lodge and Norwich faculty in attendance. The remains were taken to Franklin for burial this afternoon with A D Whitney Foster Whitney and others from Detroit Franklin and Praithlin in town.
Funeral services for Mrs Susie A Miller were held at a local church with relatives in attendance. Attendees included family members and local community figures. The service concluded with burial in a city cemetery.
The funeral for Dire Jeele A. Stewert took place Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home of EE Chnever, 34 Hill Street, where the deceased resided, with burial arrangements or references noted.
Chicago May 24 The railroad labor board plans to use the 1920 wage award as the basis for reductions in its June 1 decision. Tentative cuts range 10 to 15 percent by class of employe with minor clerical changes, affecting about 100 roads and a payroll slice estimated between 400 and 550 million dollars.
Middlebury May 24 William Kenworthy reports his daughter Gertrude Kenworthy two years old was kidnapped from their New Haven road home between 10 and 11 p m Saturday. A five passenger automobile headed north took her as she stood on the porch. The girl is described as five feet tall with dark hair and eyes and wearing a hat. Police have been alerted but no trace has been found.
Freeport Maine May 34 frost ruined early crops as fruit trees blossomed ten days ahead of normal. The frost damaged apples, vegetables, and crops around town, with growers facing significant losses and widespread concern for the season.
Leon Ganyaw, 17, a Lynden Institute sophomore, was killed when a timber fell from a wind damaged tree as his father Frederick Ganyaw and sister Mise Helen Ganyaw drove near the Vail agricultural school. The injured were taken home. Ganyaw died shortly after.
Mary J. Cutting of Newport NH seeks news of her son Curtis who left for Naval training in Newport Rhode Island in May. Friends fear for his safety as three weeks pass without word while he is stationed away from home.
Mr and Mrs Eirneet Marchetti traveled to St Johnsbury yesterday amid plans for Bernard Start of Ferrie etrmet to letter the St Johnsbary team. Bersih and Jayme Goddard, noted as a beachball coach, will be cuted for the St Jekewtbary team duties in the near term.
K D Smith Co plans to start bakery operations this week using an Edison electric oven and modern equipment. H A Stone will head the bakery, producing bread and pastry to be sold in the store with best quality at reasonable prices.
Mrs Lucia C Fasola died at 535 North Main Street yesterday afternoon after a long illness and a complication of dikeners. Born Leta Crete in Anegera Malta in 49 years ago she moved to America with relatives. She married Carl Fasola of Barre and had two children, Achille who died, and Virginia, 12. Survived by husband, two daughters, and several relatives. Funeral tomorrow morning at St Monica's, burial in Cathville cemetery.
Renry Michael Tierney longtime resident of Barre passed away late last evening in Springfield after a brief illness. He was the son of Michael Tierney and survived by his father and siblings. Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of St. John Catholic Church with interment at St. John Catholic cemetery. Survivors include Mrs Patrick Brown and John Tierney of South Main Street and several sisters and brothers.
Prank R Calder longtime Lima granite worker and retailer died at about 30 years in the trade. He learned the granite craft at McDonald and Burhans and ran a Lima retail granite business for around a decade. He was born in Barre and survived by his wife and several siblings, with funeral arrangements noted locally.
The Vermont Public Service Commission refused to sanction an extra fuel charge sought by Montpelier & Barre Light & Power Co. The ruling, issued after a hearing in Montpelier on April 12, saves about 90000 dollars yearly for Barre region granite manufacturers and quarriers.
