A report states Mexican President Carranza died in an attack while fleeing Mexico. The assault is described as treachery by his own followers, allegedly led by General Rodolfo Herrera who recently shifted to the president’s side.
Mexico City May 21 Venustiano Carranza fled the capital on May 6 and after a battle near Rinconada he was killed at Tlaxcalantongo at 1 a.m. Thursday. Carranza’s companions, unnamed, are reported to have shared his fate. General Rodolfo Herrera led the attack. Official dispatches from General Alvaro Obregon’s headquarters give the notice. Carranza, elected president March 11 1917, had fled into Puebla’s mountains and his death ends a turbulent political career marked by conflicts with Huerta and Villa. The report notes uncertainties over affiliations and loyalties during the final days of the revolution. The village of Tlaxcalantango lies near Huauchinango in Puebla state.

In a clash between whites and blacks in Fayetteville North Carolina on May 22 a white man named Butler was killed two other whites were wounded and several black men were burned in a Negro section. Troops were not deployed as the city quieted after an altercation between a white girl and a Black woman in a suburban mill village.

Ruean May 22 The British schooner John Mt Wiel was rammed and sunk by the steamer Lake. The Lake Elsah, under Shipping Board, was reported bound for Santaam, Porto Blew, and Baltimore after leaving Barbados for St Juba on April 17 and April 28 respectively. The crew was picked up by the Lake.

Philadelphia May 22 Grover Bergdoll the wealthy draft dodger who escaped from non commissioned officers at his mother's home here yesterday in a high powered motor car remains at large. Federal and city authorities say an all night search failed to reveal his direction. Circulating des patches describing the fugitive were sent nationwide. Bergdoll was on a three days furlough from Fort Jay prison to attend to confidential business matters. The Justice Department remains convinced he had aid in his escape. He wore olive drab prison garb and carried a neck disc with his vo u t ie number 10.
Portland Oregon May 22 Senator Fi racn W Johnson led the field of four candidates for the Republican presidential preference vote as returns from the Oregon primary came in early today. Johnson carried Fifteen counties with 1 178 votes while Wood had 1 104 and Lowden 417 and Hoover trailed with a small tally.

Newport May 22 Walter Wyman of Trasburg pleaded guilty before Judge W W Wright to a criminal assault on 12 year old Nellie Tift last weeks and was sentenced to not less than ten nor more than 20 years at hard labor in the Windsor state prison. The girl’s mother Ethel Tift was sent to Windsor for eight to ten years for complicity. Wyman was captured in Detroit by Edward Brown of the Wood Detective agency and brought here yesterday after eluding arrest for weeks.
A district health report shows measles as the dominant communicable disease in April. Of 192 total cases, ? include measles, with Barre leading and Barre Town and Northfield reporting significant shares. The document lists cases by town for influenza, diphtheria, measles, scarlet fever, whooping cough, and pneumonia across multiple Vermont communities.
BENNINGTON May 22 Mrs TR and Howard wife of Trustee Howard died in a punectee ale accident at Pittam Memorial hospital from injuries after she fell from a clothesline rope between two smiling lines. The rope broke and she was thrown about 200 feet. She suffered a broken collarbone wrist rib injuries and pleural pressure leading to pleurisy and lester porcine.
Newport on May 22 Sewell Wilson, a farmer living on the Glenn Reed farm, was badly injured yesterday when gored by a bull he was tending in the pasture. He received twenty eight stitches and was taken to a local hospital.
Barré candidate John W Gordon announces for the second Vermont district seat in Congress. He supports a large standing army and navy, a non monopolistic tariff, a stronger diplomatic service, a national budget, veterans benefits, merchant marine, and prohibition with Volstead revision. He faces Porter H Dale and two others in the GOP race. Gordon, 62, Barre native and former mayor, highlights broad public service and a history of legislative work.
