British and French forces push gains in northern France as Haig and Petain continue offensives. French lines near Moronvilliers capture trenches and 800 German prisoners, while British advances along the Hindenburg line extend beyond a mile with persistent fighting on the Arras front.
On June 5 all men age 21 to 31 must register except those already in the U S military services on that date. National guardsmen not mustered into federal service by June 5 must register. Sickness or absence from home does not excuse registration. Penalties include one year imprisonment for failure or false statements, and court martial for those under military law.

The French passenger vessel Colbert carrying military passengers was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean on April 20 by German submarine U-boat activity. The French admiralty reports the loss of several crew and military passengers, including the ship's commander. The Colbert, a passenger liner, was attacked while in the French service, with casualties among officers and crew.
Mitchell Denour a 22 year old private in Co B 1st Vermont Infantry National Guard was fatally struck by the Boston Montreal express on the Canadian Pacific bridge near Richford May 21. He died after severe head injury and leg fractures following a dash for life as a guard warned him of the oncoming train. The incident marks the third Company B death since border mobilization and second since the war with Germany.
William P D Brown 61, of the St James hotel on West Street Rutland, was killed instantly at 1 30 am when struck by a car attached to a switching engine at the Rand Land railroad yards south end. Born in New York he came to Rutland in 1910 from St Johnsbury where he worked in printing. Survived by seven children and two sisters and two brothers. Also two sisters Mrs Jennie Fassett and Mrs George Knapp of Fort Ticonderoga N Y John H Brown of St Johnsbury and Edward Brown of Burlington.
A body of an unknown man, about 60, was found Saturday in the White river roughly a mile and a half below the village. Discovered by log drivers for American Realty Co. Health Officer G B Crown notified. Identification unlikely. body sent to Pine Hill Cemetery after inspection.
The double funeral for Mia Clementine Bianchi and her son Angrico Bianchi was held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Montpelier. Friends and relatives attended at the Barre Street home, with floral tributes from the family and local clubs. The interment followed at Hope Cemetery, with bearers from the Montpelier Wiremre club and attendees from nearby towns.

He married Emma Corniwh, who survives, along with seven children and nineteen grandchildren. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1:00 PM at Mr. Ather’s home with Rev. W. Le Bojcourt officiating.
Adalgise Ville wife of A Villa for Berlin street paid 300 fine and 30.66 costs after entering a guilty plea in city court to illegal selling of liquor. Deputy Sheriff Dennis Donahue of Graniteville arrested her on a complaint from Town Grand Juror A C Dickey of Barry Town. Four disclosures by Graniteville youths, one a minor, led to the case. Three continuances occurred as witnesses were subpoenaed. counsel stated a plea of guilty would be entered. Grand Juror Dickey prosecuted, G H Jackson defended.
London, May 21. Premier Lloyd George said the government will summon a convention of representative Irishmen in Ireland to submit a constitution for future government. The convention will be crown-nominated chair and include local governing bodies churches trade unions commerce and educational groups including Sinn Feiners. If substantial agreement is reached Parliament will enact the necessary measures.
Early afternoon police raided a River Street home and arrested Mire A for alleged illicit activity. The raid targeted a wine and whiskey operation run from a Highland Sprihzyaby residence. Detainees faced charges and were held awaiting further court actions.
Ira C. Calef, a prominent Barre financier and longtime Vermont benefactor, died today at his Washington home after a decline following an earlier illness. Born in Washington in 1828, he built a vast career from Boston meat shops to Des Moines and Chicago packing operations, later supporting Goddard Seminary and Washington town interests. He leaves a brother John Calef and numerous nephews and nieces. funeral Wednesday at 2 PM at the Calef home with interment in the village cemetery. flowers omitted.

He supported Massachusetts General Hospital and hospitals in Providence Barre Montpelier Burlington Randolph Bellows Falls. A director and large stockholder of Peoples National Bank, he kept a busy schedule yet remained a genial friend. He attended the Universalist church and stayed engaged in civic affairs until illness.
Gov. Horace Graham spoke as Barre hosted a massive flag raising and parade on a sunny Saturday. About 15,900 people lined streets to cheer, with Italian committee leaders hosting state officials and local dignitaries. The event featured five bands, veterans, nurses, 1,700 schoolchildren, scouts, and numerous clubs, all moving in an orderly 35 minute procession past North Main, Maple, and Seminary streets.
Otto Lawrence of 239 Elim Street owned a Ford that toppled on the East Barre Washington road after a light shower. Lawrence and two passengers were thrown free. Lawrence injured, others shaken, car damaged with mudguards tires and steering gear damaged, engine ran until shut off, vehicle hauled to the city.
A two vehicle crash on Washington Street involved Antonio Bianchi and Millar as their cars met near Academy Street. The Cadillac struck Bianchi’s Buick on the side causing significant damage to axles and steering components. Both vehicles remained on the south side until Millar entered Academy Street, obscured by an ascending car.
