At Glencove on May 21 the New York Sound offered little wind and smooth water as the Columbia and Reliance prepared for a race. Start was postponed, boats gathered near the line, and the wind shifted to the south, becoming steadier but light. The Reliance towered over the Columbia as both yachts waited for better conditions.
Liverpool May 21 The Post reports London cabs again claim at the Marlborough Club on Tuesday one of the King's household cavalcade attended. The tale is unlikely but the King’s physicians monitor the monarch closely as his health remains fragile. In Rome he reportedly dozed twice during a reception beside the Queen of Italy.
Boston May 20 Some modifications of the cattle embargo have been authorized to meet spring trade needs between Massachusetts and New Hampshire and Vermont. Vermont is exempt from most regulations except a few towns. Because Vermont borders New Hampshire a quarantine state shipments require department consent. Government inspectors placed at Bellows Falls oversee cattle shipped to Massachusetts.
Yesterday's American League results include Boston at New York 2 to 0 in ten innings, Brooklyn 16 Cincinnati 2, Detroit 4 Philadelphia 1, Chicago 9 New York 5, Cleveland 5 St Louis 4, and Boston 3 in ten innings. Collegiate games list Yale 10 Lagrange, Princeton 25 Lehigh 0, Harvard 7 Bowdoin 3, Fordham 10 Vermont 1.
Sheriff Kelley reports a Montreal photo identification clears Armand Voyer as the suspect in a local burglary case. A La Presse image helped establish his identity, with Ottawa authorities arranging transfer to Canada after local sentencing. The case links Voyer to a Montreal rogues’ list and a possible accomplice.
In Windsor on May 20 the United States Circuit and District Court convened for a hearing on the indictment of C E George for unlawful acts. The demurrer was overruled and the respondent ordered to answer. A cautionary motion was also overruled and a telgram schedule was entered in multiple cases including Skilley Dean and Caltech, Ford, and administrators against New England.
May 21 Burlington Vermont. W P McGetrick, late governor candidate on a Democratic slate, predicts New England may nominate Richard Olney. He notes disturbances harming business and supports a popular wave for Hearst Williams or Carter II, with Gorman in second place possible. He says it is too early to predict the convention or the election outcome.
In Gennington on May 20 a large meeting of plant employees discussed a ten hour day and a Saturday half holiday. A committee reported manufacturers would approve the ten hour day but not the Saturday half holiday. The plan was deemed satisfactory, and mills will shift to the new arrangement with all plants operating on a ten hour day.
In New York a mob of workmen gathered at Fourth Avenue and Lafayette Avenue after rumors contractors would import 300 black workers from Baltimore to the subway strike zone. Police dispersed the crowd with billy clubs. several were battered but no arrests were reported.
May 21 in New York marker region reports state Meahauw BN. Seligman, banker, who attempted to commit suicide last night, is expected to make a speedy recovery. Prindle and Averill have received a large assignment of kerosene collectors.
The Barre Odd Fellows lodge elected Grand Master S. R. Read and other grand officers at Enosburgh Falls. Attendance nears 400 as Bellows Falls hosts next year. Assessors announce city tax roll shows 484 more Grand List names this year, netting about $58,018 and an estimated tax roll between $42,001 and $44,000.
Morrisville May 20. The Mould and Boynton granite sheds, idle for months after a fire, will reopen with employment for workers. Twenty business men have pledged 2000 to repair sheds and install new polishing machines, compressor and power from a 10 place. Lumber is on site as crews clear for a new wing and a separate blacksmith shop. Machinery ordered. plant to restart by late June.
Burlington May 20 The first man fined for a second offence of intoxication under the law is Patrick McGuire. He pleaded guilty in city court this morning and was fined 15 dollars and costs of 80.70. Three bureau men were fined for remaining to idle Haw ik Since May 1 when Howse temme effective there have been 62 arrests for intoxication. 06 of 23 boarders in the county jail today were in for
City business at a standstill as drunkenness cases rise. William Fahy and Angaat Anderson were arrested by the police last night. Both pleaded guilty to intoxication this morning and were fined the usual costs. Anderson was jailed for 10 days.
Barting May 20, Kerstich of Winooski sues Central Vermont Railway for 15000 claiming a train at Toad's crossing struck him without whistle or bell. He says injuries left him unable to work since December 1902. Case set for September term in Chittenden County Court.
A man named Thomas Lane was struck by a 1:16 train beside a dry bridge over Stockwell. The engine knocked him against the bridge end. he was rescued, brought to the station, and Dr. Kald attended him.
Plainmen on the Montpaier and Wall River railroad report a forest fire near Meacham pond running beyond control of fire fighters. The Groton area fire continues but with slower progression and limited damage. Head Pond surroundings have burned over but little further damage expected.
A man believed to be Edward O'Brien nearly stepped onto a Vermont railway line near Montpelier at noon. An abrupt stop at the Welle River station revealed a fan on the track. Deputy Fitzgerald transported O'Brien to the cooler, aided by vigilant railway staff.
William Heyes was arrested at 11:15 that night at his rooms in Exchange block by Chief Tolloe Brownell and Patrolman Cosgrove on a warrant by City Grand Juror Sherman. He is charged with operating a gambling establishment. Howard was found playing poker and escorted to the police station, with others in the game also detained as no warrants had been issued for them.
Albert H White of Rutland files for voluntary bankruptcy in Burlington on May 20. Petition lists debts around 2600 with 500 exempt. Court clerk records show liabilities and assets as presented by the debtor.
The Weather Bureau forecasts exceptionally high temperatures across the United States. May 21 reports indicate heat likely to persist nationwide with record heat levels in many regions.
State Health Officer Holton visits Montpelier to assess Berlin Pond contamination risk. He urges piping reservoir water to the big pond to prevent contamination from Berlin Corner and Parson farm. City leaders pledge swift compliance with state health board recommendations under the new law. The board will notify Mayor Corry by letter in a few days.
Word reached Barre of the death of Mrs Adolph Schilling, age 37, wife of a Schilling Co. Albany dealer. She died at her Albany home after four weeks of illness. Funeral is set for Albany at 4 p.m. She left a mother and siblings, and is mourned by many in Barre and Albany where she studied and taught.
Mr A Bugbee of Bughes Alexander granite works and Mrs Bughes were surprised by about forty friends at their Orange Street home for their eighteenth wedding anniversary. Rev Lowe led a brief service, a dinner was served, and gifts were presented to the couple including a decorative centerpiece for their daughter.
Members of the water committee investigated the condition of the water supply at Alderites, Orange day. They found several leaks in the reservoir and stopped them to prevent water waste. Aldervan Borke stated there was not enough water in the reservoir to fit a new pipe as the water towers had risen in two days. Montpelier May 21. There was one drunk in court this morning. Eaw and O'Brien will serve ten days in jail.
