London reports intensified German artillery from Locon to Hinges and between Nieppe and Meteren on the Flanders front. Paris notes violent fighting near Hailes and Mesnil Saint Georges with pris oners taken and French detachments penetrating German lines near Varennes.

London May 17 In spite of deter mined opposition by German airplanes British aviators on Thursday dropped bombs of factories and the railway station at Saarbrucken in German Lorraine starting a fire on the railway. After bombing the town the Britishers turned on the enemy and in aerial fighting says an official statement last midnight destroyed five of the enemy machines. One British airplane was lost. In intense aerial fighting on the western front Wednesday 37 German air liners were accounted for by their aviators while eleven British machines are reported missing.
American aviators northwest of Toul engaged three German planes at dawn. Lieutenant Edward Rickenbacher of Columbus, Ohio, shot down one enemy craft and crossed three kilometers into enemy lines. He was decorated with a French war cross on Wednesday and had aided in another victory two weeks earlier.
