Harbin May 17. A massive fire in Kirin, capital of Kirin province, destroyed 8,367 buildings, 4,000 shops and 15 banks. About 40,000 people were left homeless, with losses estimated at $20,000,000. Kirin’s population is listed at 86,000.
A large fire in Portland Maine destroyed the city high school building and contents valued at about 8100,000. The blaze began in the boiler room and within fifteen minutes the structure had suffered severe damage, with several other downtown buildings seriously threatened.
Cordova Alaska May 17 The U S cruiser Buffalo lies near millions of tons of coal but is stranded for want of fuel. Authorities plan to send a collier from Puget Sound about sixteen hundred miles away. Nearby coal fields cannot be tapped until field title is decided.
Washington May 17 Major General Frederick 0 Grant is slated to replace General Carter as commander of the Texas division of the army. Secretary of War-designate Dick Dingo haw selected Grant for the duty, but the change awaits Henry N Stimson becoming secretary of war. The War Department seeks to time the command with opportunities arising in the high rank during the winter months.
In Viterbo on July 17, Francisco Desiderio, among those tied to the Camorra case, faced the informer at a trial where Genarro Abbatemaggio testified about a gathering at the Aida tavern in Taguoli. Abbatemaggio alleged Desiderio aided the doomed conspiracy and denied the claim when confronted.
Senator Stone of Missouri told the Senate finance committee he would soon press for a vote on reciprocity and the free list bill. He said hearings would not drag on indefinitely.
Nogales Cal May 17 A V Hard Yee an amateur aviator from Ohio was killed today at Dominguer field while testing an aeroplane. He had made several successful flights and had recently arrived from Ohio.
Arrivals at the City hotel include K Hf Roberts Plymouth G H W Mayo Berlin N Hs Jowph Pitasan and others. City water will be turned off from 6 pm Sunday May 21 for repairs and service.
Ahner N. Pine of Montpelier filed a bankruptcy petition in Rutland on May 17 in the United States court. The filing lists his assets and exemptions, noting liabilities and a claim of S120.
Obituary note for Willis V Bryan a longtime local druggist from Waterbury Vermont who died after eight days illness at age about 40. He leaves a widow Estella Holinsen of Mar rinnville a brother Frank Regan in Montpelier and Fred in Warf Bertington and many friends. Funeral arrangements pending in St Albans and Hoosburg with details to be announced.
Syracuse University Chancellor James R. Day issues a statement defending Standard Oil in a Supreme Court related case. He argues dissolution would harm the country and credits the company with lowering prices, urging obedience to court decisions and labeling prosecutions as not in the public interest. He cites reduced gasoline prices and the court’s view of the company’s relation to antitrust law.
Chicago on May 17 reported one death and two prostrations from the heat as the day reached a maximum of 80 degrees. No relief from the heat was promised to residents.
Roston May 17. John J. McCoy a 30 year old shoe salesman from Philadelphia fell six stories from a downtown hotel onto Mason street. The body crashed to the pavement as theatregoers were entering several playhouses nearby. It is unclear whether the death was suicide or accidental. No one else was harmed.
Florence M Dodge of Tanetburg, sentenced to four to six years in the state pen for the murder of William Heath, was yesterday installed as housekeeper at the prison. She may wear civilian clothes and is not required to wear prison garb or uniforms. Sundays allow a light dress.
May 17 report from Mexico City says Foreign Minister De La Barra expects a definite result from today’s cabinet meeting on rebel negotiations. Finance Minister Limantour remains cautiously hopeful but notes some rebel demands conflict with government dignity. In Magdalena, 300 rebels faced 100 rural and state troops, eleven rebels killed and five government casualties reported.
Hennington May 17 Tuaoph Frank the big German held in county jail since the afternoon of February 2 after a fight at South Shaftsbury shop. He fired two bullets from a revolver killing Robert Mallory, a former resident. Adjourned hearing before Judge Hollow yesterday with Daniel A Crainman for the defense and W J Meagher for the state. Frank remains in jail in lieu of 2000 bond. Grand jury to meet first week in June.
A Windham County jury was empaneled in Newfane as the trial of Frank Jr. Boyd of Wilmington for the alleged murder of John Niewegar opened. Dr. Paige and witnesses testified about Potter's death and the Boyd home, with plans of the homestead presented by C B Crowell. The state’s evidence suggested self defense as the defense’s line.

Reports say Reine Eagle Pans Texas faced threats as rebels were said to be within twelve miles of the town. The predicted attack did not materialize by nightfall, but about 2,000 refugees fled toward Eagle Pass, crowding the area.
In Guaymas Sonora May 17 Major Medina Barrow and an Agua Prieta federal force reinforced by a hundred Yau Indiang infantry attacked Bacum on the Yauvi river yesterday and seized the town. Rebels fled southward with uncertain casualty tolls and are expected to regroup when reinforcements arrive.
Bellows Falls hosts a reunion of four McQuaid brothers who had not met for over 20 years. Andrew J. McQuaid is listed as 16, Vig Lewie McQuaid 70, Vij Tromon KR McQuaid 63, and Roger A. Metyean 2, all born in the town and educated locally. Their mother Laure Lovell was daughter of Capt. Christoper Lovell, and their father Daniel McQuaid came to the town as a child.
A May flood hit Lemberg Austria, a town of about 11 000 residents, inundating houses and damaging oil works. Ricks and other equipment were swept away as the cloud burst caused major destruction in town.
Thomas Simpson died suddenly at home of blood poisoning after a neck swelling cartuncle. He was 24 years old, lived in St Albans 19 years, born in Greenock Scotland, member of Franklin Lodge A M and St Albans Canton. Funeral at his parents’ Fairfield street residence Thursday afternoon at two o'clock.
St Albans hosts the Patrarchs Militant as part of Odd Fellows week. Fifteen new members were admitted to the grand encampment and officials noted a year end decline due to suspensions for non payment of dues. Barre Canton won the competitive drill, Lafayette of Burlington second, and Rutland third. The evening program at City Hall featured a concert and a grand ball with a modest attendance.
John Straw, nearly 70, died at his Bridge Street home after a runaway incident two weeks earlier. He was a longtime wood worker in Stowe, survived by his wife Elmoris Marshall and siblings. Funeral likely Friday at 2:30 PM at the Unitarian Church.
County court spent the day ruling on the case W B Turney v EK NX Normandeau granting the right to alter the judgment from Barre city court. The judge ordered S405 returned to Mr Lurie. A divorce case Bedard v Bedard opened and is expected to take the day.
A still alarm summoned fire units to 10 Merchant Street this afternoon to a rear kitchen fire in a large tenement owned by A. Tomani. Firefighters found a clogged stove pipe causing sparks from a kitchen range to the chimney. smoke and heat were contained without chemical extinguishers. The incident involved Mrs D Te and was resolved on scene.

After two weeks at Montpelier the Vermont supreme court adjourned yesterday afternoon. Most cases from Windham County were argued on briefs with several decisions in lower court appeals and jury trials postponed. The council discussed granite paving on North Main Street and Granite Street, street improvements, eight hour day proposals for city workers, and water department staffing.
The 35th Washing ton County Christian Endeavor Union convention meets in Waterbury on Friday May 21 with attendees expected from area societies. Program includes prayers, reports, papers, conferences, meals, music, and evening services led by Rev W L Boicourt and Walter D Dowell with Bennington and Montpelier speakers.
Mrs Clara M Brown died after a two week illness at her daughter Mrs A H Lewis's Cottage Street home at 6 o'clock this morning. She leaves son William Brown of Taunton and daughter Tawis. Born Bakersfield December 24 1826 she was 86 and one of the oldest women in the city. Married William J Brown in Huntington February 14 1848. Lived in Dover NH then Barte since 1960. Affiliated with the Episcopal church. Funeral at the house Friday at 10 with Rev Wo FM Moeattie officiating. Interment in Hope Cemetery.
Spanish American War veterans of Warkington county held a muster outing at Caledonia Park to honor their service beginning May 16 1888. The event included sports in the forenoon and lunch at the pavilion. The officers elected at the business meeting were Captain W A Patte president T Carnwell vice presidents FL Howe secretary C J Royce first sergeant Prank FE Barre treasurer Prank added. A notable segment featured A Cinco winning after the company had tried him.
