A May 1 proclamation declares martial law on Formosa and a state of siege across the island. Notes mined waters around Formosa and reports the steamer Sobraltense sank yesterday near Port Arthur, with European passengers and crew believed drowned after jettisoning.
Hong Kong dispatch reports seventeen war ships sighted Wednesday evening two and a half miles off Three Kings at the entrances to Hankatie Bay. Transports were observed alive at Knabe Pass seventy miles north of Kemranh Bay in Cochin China.
An apparent homicide occurred after a man named Croker died on a passenger train route between Lon a and Wyandotte. Witnesses say Charles Wood of Coates hotel arranged for Croker to accompany him to a resort before Croker collapsed on the return trip. The case centers on the night’s events and the hotel’s involvement.
Flood reports from West Virginia on May 13 describe the Upper Sandy river and nearby areas suffering widespread damage. Rail lines along the Twelve Great Kanawha and the Lit tows have been inundated, with many crops ruined as streams and rivers flood farms and infrastructure.

In Cuba UL on May 13 a Black man named Tom Witherspoon accused of robbing Assemblyman Fred Hess was seized by a mob of several hundred at Belmont and hanged in the public square. Hess was forced to fetch money, then ordered to drive to Belmont with his family before the mob escalated. Bloodhounds and a pursuit followed, but the suspect was captured and executed by vigilantes in the square.
In the old Exchange Hotel bar room and cellar in Montpelier two hiding spaces were discovered behind clever panels and a tapped wall that produced no hollow sound. Each space was large enough for a stash of goods. The panelled hidings bore a chalked note claiming \"$21,000 worth of in this year\" though no date was provided. The hotel had stood closed for several years.
The May 1 report says Admiral Naximall of the Russian navy was assassinated by a former orderly with a revolver. The oddly mixed text also mentions Sheldon Reulbach, a University of Vermont pitcher, being signed by the Chicago Nationals and discusses his baseball career and offers amid unrelated notes.
Chicago May 14 The joint council meets to decide on continuing the strike after a two hour session with teamsters officials and the team owners association. The owners declare the strike lost and call it off. John Driscoll resigns as secretary and Miracle Manufacturers association upholds the Employers association stance. Thousands laid off as industries slow due to the strike.
Nan Patter son returned to Washington from New York with her father sister and brother in law J Morgan Smith amid a crowd of about 250 at the Ponagyly railroad station. She led her father arm in arm and told reporters she was awfully glad to get home as the party drove to their home where a sorrowing mother awaited the erring daughter.
Seven men were killed and one or more injured in a pair of explosions at Heinze property Cornmina in Butte Montana. Nels Wampa carried forty sticks of dynamite up a ladder when a blast occurred. A candle reportedly ignited dynamite causing the fatal sequence. Remains of several victims were scattered, with bodies found in sacks.
Cimutton New Hampshire May 1 Det Clifton B Hildreth returned to Manchester after three days of inquiry failing to uncover any clue in the disappearance of 14 year old Elwyn Braley. county authorities and Grafton sleuths had sought leads for nearly two weeks without result.
New York May 12 Joseph Lewis aged 104 died at his home. He served with two sons in the Civil War and was known as the father of 27 children.
The Woodbury Granite Co has taken a subcontract from Horton Hemenway Construction Co of Providence for granite work on the Providence post office. The building will be clad in Woodbury granite at an estimated $900,000. John D Sargent says work will start immediately after a long lull since last November when 350 to 400 men normally employed dwindled to a handful. Local joy follows the revival of building activity.
Thieves broke into the E. B. Ellis granite works shed No. 3 at Northfield on Thursday night, stealing chain and tools and damaging finished stones valued around $200. The act suggests intoxicated participants but left unfinished stock untouched while a night watchman was watched. Multiple individuals likely involved as the crime occurred while others were nearby.
