Paris reports two German attempts to retake positions on the western slope of Dead Man's Hill, taken by the French on May 10, thwarted by French artillery. Artillery activity continues around Avecourt wood and the Pourmont Vaux sectors. Berlin notes German assaults on British lines near Hulluch.
Berlin reports via wireless that the Austrian Hungarian passenger steamer Dubrovvinnik was torpedoed and sunk by an enemy submarine in the Adriatic. The vessel, unarmed, was struck without warning according to the Qverseax news agency.
Premier Asquith arrived in Dublin to confer with departmental chiefs and General Maxwell on the military situation. A proclamation to abolish martial law is reported likely, with provisions recently altered. The unrest in the provinces may require continued military control and citizens will be consulted on reconstruction.
The contested divorce case Schwartz v Schwart e began in Washington County Court with Mrs. Schwar te seeking separation from bed and board and Mr. Schwartz asking for an absolute divorce. Testimony included accusations of assault and extravagance, with witnesses describing threats and violence while the couple's four minor children are involved in custody questions.
The May 12 Washington report says former President Taft, as head of the Red Cross central committee, urged a protest to Britain over its refusal to permit hospital supplies destined for the central powers. He notes Britain has blocked shipments since Oct 1915, except for units in the central powers, and argues under the Geneva convention the United States can demand safe passage.
A Central News despatch from Amsterdam says Captain Bernhard Hoya, formerly German naval attaché in Washington, has been awarded the order of the Bell Hagle third class with swords by the Emperor.
Hethel May 12. The annual convention of the North Windsor Sunday School association met in the Congregational church with about 120 out of town guests attending meals and evening events. Walter M. W. of White River Junction presided and officers were elected: A F Till of Woodstock as president, Marion Webster Hartland secretary, Latre Dutten Royalton assistant, C T Nose Wilder treasurer, Hattie M. Fey South Hartford.
Clara B Lowe challenged an award in the Supreme Court terms at Burlington. The March term will begin after a long trial period with about 30 exams and several from Washington county. The case stems from a decade old county court action as the defense sought relief and the plaintiff aimed to recover costs.
Washington official confirms Secretary Baker ordered General Scott back to Washington and General Funston to San Antonio after the border conference ended without an agreement. The administration plans to keep troops on the border until border raid danger is definitively removed, with no new Mexican policy changes or deployments announced.
After nearly two weeks of talks among Generals Scott Funston and Obregon over US troop dispositions in Mexico the discussions ended without a settlement. The matter was referred back to the respective governments for diplomatic handling and stated to not harm bilateral relations.

Curtis Bayles, an American farmer, was shot and killed near his home a short distance from Mercedes Texas by four or five Mexicans who fled, possibly crossing the Rio Grande. A posse of thirty U.S. cavalrymen from Mercedes pursued the band but found no trace by late night.
A forest fire driven by forty mph winds swept over a timbered area north of Rockingham destroying a house and barn owned by Senator Netveil while volunteers from Charlestown aided in saving other buildings. The blaze started from a saw mill and spread toward Burlington and Vergennes, injuring James J. O’Neill who jumped from a truck and was hospitalized.
Northfield resident Benjamin Pettingill died fighting a forest fire near the depot after stepping on a barbed wire. John Drew, a volunteer firefighter from Middleton, is believed dead in a separate blaze that scorched about 500 to 1,000 acres. Fire crews from Tilton, Concord, and local districts battled the flames. several timber lots, including holdings owned by Leroy Aglines, were destroyed.
A long evening blaze on Camp Street destroyed a frame barn and several tons of hay on the Richardson estate near Edgewood. Firefighters battled wind and spread to Langley’s Edgewood roof. no insurance coverage found, owner had left with chickens minutes before discovery. Suspected that trespassers sparked the fire.
At a Barre meeting the Board of Trade appointed a committee led by KE M Tobin to coordinate with the Barre Woman's Club and the city council on an upcoming campaign. A transportation and railroad coordination group was also named to work with Central Vermont Railway on station and evening services. A separate committee was created to arrange a series of public meetings to boost town acquaintance during the summer months.

Dr Francis J Fling of Oakland lectured on Christian Science to about 200 followers in Howland Hall. James M Howe introduced the speaker and traced the faith to Mary Baker Eddy, noting its aim to heal and demonstrate truth through life, love, and understanding.
George B. Milne, famed Barre granite entrepreneur and longtime partner in Routwell Milne & Varnum, died in Denver. Born December 31, 1857 in Scotland, he came to Barre in 1883 and built Milne & Wyllie before forming Milne & Gray and later the quarrying firm Routwell Milne & Varnum. Survived by his wife and connections, his death ends a pivotal era in Barre’s stone industry.
Miss Mary Lyme aged 12 of See Street died after being hit by a motor vehicle near Indian Orchard. The deceased was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Lownie. The incident is being investigated and the exact cause remains under review.
