The Senate and House conferrees reached a consensus on the major army bill. Parties expect the measure to proceed to both chambers for confirmation as quickly as possible, with the draft age set at 24 to 30 inclusive and excluding Roosevelt era terms.
Washington May 10 The conferees on the army bill reached agreement and will report to both houses for confirmation as soon as possible. The Senate amendment allowing Roosevelt to raise divisions for France service was dropped as was authorizing three volunteer regiments for border patrol duty. The age limit for selective draft was set from 21 to 40. Senate amendments prohibiting liquor sales at army camps and safeguarding troops morale were kept.
The Shipping Board announced the purchase of seven Austrian merchantmen totaling 62,621 tons for 6,778,006 dollars. The vessels include Dora Bray Aun Vernsa Lucias and were bought from New York owners who waived profits. Ships to be repaired and used in war emergency trade. payment from war emergency fund.
Washington May 10 The $2 010 000 000 issue of war loan bonds announced by McAdoo will be in denominations from 30 to 100 000 and mature in 30 years. Redemption possible in 15 years and subject to four installments with a conversion option into future bonds at higher rates during the war. Subscriptions require 2 percent upfront. remaining payments scheduled for four dates through August.
Washington May 1 127 Americans remain prisoners in crews taken from captured armed merchantmen. The State Department reported that officials learned the men were seized by raiders operating in the South and then transported to Germany.

Brattleboro May 10 Andrew Petos found guilty by a Windham county jury after about ten minutes deliberation on charges of attempting to break out of jail on April 2. Judge Waterman sentenced him to two years less a day to two and a half years at hard labor in Windsor prison. Archie Gandman cleared on the same charge. both defendants represented by local attorneys. Petos had been held on larceny charges and faced possible transfer from Rahway reformatory awaiting pickup.
Frank Tham, reportedly demented by ill health, left his home in White River Junction Tuesday. Authorities say he assaulted a party near Evarts and Quechee while fleeing in an automobile. His condition is linked to mental health and recent illness. he is married with two to three children and known as a steady, hard working man.
