May 6 dispatches from Tokio report four Kuselan torpedo boat destroyers attacked a Japanese sailing vessel. A fire set by Shota from the destroyers killed several crew members and the vessel was burned. Kuropatkin is slated for recall to command the second army. General Zambalff to succeed him.
London reports The Saturday Review judges the Chicago street unrest to show a hellish pattern similar to autocratic oppression. It warns authorities may use force to restore order, risking violent clashes reminiscent of Warsaw.
Sheriff says no disturbance likely as union leaders prepare to strike with new mare to beat education in team matters. Employers are well situated and police and sheriff forces offer protection. Heavy rain adds to the peacekeeping effort and crowds disperse.
At four o'clock this morning a handsome church in Edwaniaville near Wilkesbarre was blown up with dynamite and ruined. The pastor suspects the act was by parties opposed to his church’s liquor license.
A tornado hit Owl, J. T., near Fort Worth last night damaging the business district and destroying about 50 homes. The disaster left several dead and ten injured, with many houses washed away and the town nearly wiped out.
A young woman in New York committed suicide by shooting in her hotel room at the Imperial. She left notes accusing a man at the hotel of attentions, but no name or relation to her lover is given. Separately, Barre officials report the People's Lighting Heat and Power Company seeking to do business under a 1902 charter with capital stock of 100000 and names of founders.
Burlington May 6 James Burns a 23 year old lineman died today at the hospital after falling from an electric light pole a week ago He was unmarried and a native of St Albans.
Mary Rogers, sentenced to hang for the murder of her husband Marcus Rogers, may file a petition for a new trial before the Vermont Supreme Court on May 17. Justices Rowell and Munson ordered a stay of execution through June 2 and set a hearing for the same date, with transcript evidence treated as a copy.
James Judge, Rutland city conductor, was seriously injured in a southbound freight wreck at Manchester peak. A marble load struck the caboose top, tossing Judge to the ground. he was treated at Manchester hospital with hip, abdominal and facial injuries. He is expected to recover if no internal damage appears.
Pat Crowe, linked to the Eddie Cudahy kidnaping, entered a newspaper office at 1 am seeking surrender and police protection after years as a fugitive. He claims years of immunity negotiations but would not confirm or deny involvement. In another item, Barre council debates fire station tower issues and a South Main Street streetcar extension.
Miles Standish died last night at Heaton hospital Montpelier after an operation three months ago. He was born in Montpelier and would have been 24 in August. He played professional baseball with the Puritan Battery and later with Pawtucket Haverhill Fall River and the New York Nationals league team. Survived by his parents Mr and Mrs W C Standish two brothers Fred and Richard and Mrs Lorimer of New York. Funeral from the Montpelier Unitarian church tomorrow at 2 o'clock with interment in Green Mount Cemetery.
John Shannon, famed for more arrests than any man in Vermont, appeared in Rutland city court after a year of freedom. The judge ruled that prior intoxication convictions under the old law do not carry under the new law, granting Shannon a first offence.
Mrs M Goulant of Groton spent Friday in town visiting friends. Miss Ells Lamberton attended a play in Montpelier. Mrs Charles Sheaf visited Marshfield to see her husband, the station agent. Others include visitors from Boston and Wells River, measles cases, and locals resuming creamery work.
The schedule committee failed to report after yesterday’s meeting in Washington. J. B. Taylor of Burlington will report soon. Openers set for June 24 with Rutland vs Burlington at Burlington and Intercity vs Plattsburg at Plattsburg. Doubleheaders planned July 4 and September 4 between Burlington Rutland and Intercity Plattsburg, with some details pending.
An adjourned hearing at the State House settled the accounts of Dr. B W Braley Barre administrator of the B W Bartholomew estate. The administrator’s service claim was cut to 3000 from 5200 after a compromise. The estate originally stood at 150000 with most distributed, leaving about 0 in heirs. Heirs listed include Wred Dr W Be Barre, George Hraley Oakland CA, Bartholomew Walworth Worcester MA, and George Walworth Newport.
Prof Howard Dari of the Rutland public schools resigns to take effect at the end of the school year. He plans to organize a commercial school elsewhere in New York state. A graduate of Rochester New York business college, he has been a successful Vermont teacher.
The Gleaners met last evening at the home of Miss Bessie Whitcomb on Main Street for their annual banquet. Toasts honored each member with initials and favors bearing a humorous note about professions, while guests chose slips predicting ideal places for various careers.
A damaged note explains that Mr. Rus must cancel involvement in the entertainment course due to a family illness. The letter, written by Geo Britt on behalf of the organizers, asks to inform Barre and Rutland to abandon their voitures and mentions offering another lecturer in Mr. Kis place.
A fire burned a pile of rubbish and railroad ties behind A Pieris house on Granite Street last evening at nine. The alarm from box 15 summoned Hook and Ladder Company, but the flames were not extinguished. Police suspect local boys started the fire and note changes to whistle alarms at Mor Donald Cutler & Co’s shed during inspection.
Roy Smith of this city, recently convicted of larceny of $30 from T. J. Moreer during a show at the Barre opera house last winter, was sentenced in county court to not less than two years and a quarter nor more than two and a half years in the house of correction at Rutland. The Alexander boy involved in the same case was sent to Vergennes Industrial School for the remainder of his nine-month term.
The St Moni mm Altar society May festival at Hale's Pavilion drew a large evening crowd last night with dancing from nine to midnight. Gilbertson's orchestra supplied the music. Tonight's program includes Plane jubt, Annie Sullivan, Mary Owena, chmic songs, recitations, wing, fancy flower drill, piano pieces, solos and duets by multiple performers.
