French advance gains noted by official statement issued in Paris. Fighting continues through the night west of the Meuse with censor active reporting.
Chicago May 4 William Lorimer former United States senator will start accumulating money to reimburse depositors of the bank where he was President. The jury found he did not violate banking laws nor participate in the cartel or related criminal acts connected to the bank's failure and that he had no knowledge of such violations.
Federal grand jury indicted several named figures in a suspected 1914 German conspiracy to destroy the Welland Canal. Though not all charged, allies of Franz Von Papen and others are alleged to have financed and supplied explosives and weapons for a planned bombing campaign aimed at hindering British and Irish operations. Witnesses, including Carl Tuchendier and Horst Von Der Goltz, are immune in exchange for testimony. several detainees remain at Ellis Island or in federal seclusion.
Paris May 4 French advance at Dead Man's Hill on the Verdun front continued through the night. Captured Germans say they were the only survivors in one trench. West of the Meuse a violent bombardment and a brilliant assault secured German positions northwest of Le Mort Homme with about 100 prisoners and four machine guns. Further activity reported east of the Meuse and a Danish depot destroyed at Grande Dune. The Berlin report notes French foothold in a German post south of Dead Man's Hill.
London reports refugees leaving Metz Lorraine as Russian troops reach Camp Mirabeau at Marseilles. A Zeppelin 120 crash near Norway causes multiple deaths and rescues, with several crew members saved as the airship breaks apart and sinks near Stavanger and Haslefirth.

Vermont health board launches a two month tuberculosis campaign pending lectures by Harold W. Slocum of the Red Cross. A unique motor generator moving picture rig will travel to small towns, starting at Duxbury, with four to five talks weekly plus reels on tuberculosis and public health topics.
May 4 Lyndeboro New Hampshire blaze destroys the Pinnacle House, a four year old, 100 room summer hotel atop Lyndeboro Mountain. Fire seen for miles, reports indicate the building and contents valued around 120,000, with authorities unsure of cause. An auto unit from Milford failed to reach the scene in time. The hotel had stood idle since last summer and was boarded up.
William Underhill a Barre native aged 75 died at a private hospital after a fall from a roof at the West Side Building. He worked as a roofer manager and had long service in mills in Manchester and Goits Is. A Civil War veteran, he served in the 1st New Hampshire battery and Piper’s company. Survived by nephew O I Simpson of this city and niece Mrs Gerrich of Malden. May 4.
Middlebury triumphed in a debate at Middlebury May 4 defeating the University of Vermont. The resolution urged the United States to seek ABC powers to join in defining and enforcing the Monroe doctrine. Judges were M. C. Webber Prof. Isaac Thomas and Mr. Olney. The Vermont affirmative consisted of Isham Johnson and Woodwant, while the Middlebury negative included Floyd and Huffum.
Pearce, MacDonagh and Clark were executed. Connolly was wounded. Reports from May 4 place only the rebellion’s leaders among the dead while Connolly survived.

Washington May 4 Major General Scott and General Obregon met with President Wilson as officials called the conference report satisfactory. General Obregon, Mexico's minister of war, told the Associated Press that after today’s conference with General Scott the tension between the United States and Mexico has eased. No agreement was reached yet, but progress is favorable, and he expressed high hopes for a successful culmination. It was reported that Mineral 01m received assurances the tentative terms would be acceptable to General Corransa.
Field Headquarters reports Col George A. Dodd's Seventh Cavalry clash with Villa bandits on April 22 at Temochic in the Sierra Chilualna. Americans fought from a hollow, losing two killed and three wounded, while bandits suffered at least 50 casualties amid heavy dust, rocks, and a machine gun sweep. Born in Italy, he lived in this country for years, worked at a trade until three years ago when ill health forced retirement. Funeral Saturday at 2 PM from Froggin Home, burial at Hope Cemetery.
