The jury failed to reach a verdict in the murder trial of actress Nan Patterson for Caesar Young, collapsing when reporting early. The foreman said there were no questions of law or evidence the court could resolve to aid the jurors.
New York May 4 jurors in the Nan Patterson murder trial were discharged after failing to agree. The panel split eleven for trial of second degree manslaughter and one for acquittal. Patterson fainted when the verdict of no verdict was announced and court officials prepared to proceed.
About 200 representatives gathered in Brattleboro for the annual Modern Woodmen of America encampment. The event featured a welcome by Rev. L. M Kenneston, remarks by State Deputy A. O. Palmer, a parade with 150 marchers and a First Regiment band, and an exhibition drill by teams from Brattleboro Barre and Granville. Officers were elected for the afternoon business session and Milwaukee as the national encampment site was announced with delegates and alternates named.

New York May 4 President Ames W. Alexander of the Equitable Life Assurance Company resigned as trustee of the Hyde majority stock left by the late Henry Hyde. The move follows James A. Myde’s charge that he had been disloyal to his trust.

Blackpool England May 4 bodies of Tub er Rushton Shaw and his wife Elizabeth were found in a field. Both had been shot with a revolver nearby and a note or indications point to a mutual decision. Shaw had recently learned of his wife’s alleged prior intrigue and ordered her to sail for America with their two children before he was killed.
The grand jury at court in Plymouth yesterday returned indictments naming Richard Harvey and multiple others from Woods, Lebanon, Woodaville, Lincoln, Laconia and Vermont. Charges include breaking and entering, making false statements, adultery, fraud, and related offenses. Judges and dates not specified in the fragmented OCR.
Lieut Arthur H Bennett and Miss Bertha M Burt wed at Salvation Army barracks in a hallelujah ceremony before a crowd. Original papers in the petition for a new trial for Mary Rogers were in Munson s hands yesterday afternoon. Clarice H Senter of the law firm Senter and Senter prepared the filing. The next move is the announcement by Chief Judge Rowell and Judge Munson on whether the petition can be brought before the full bench at the May term.
A twelve year old boy, Rutland Foster, died from a 28 caliber gunshot wound caused by his eight year old brother Gear while shooting at a target. The incident, which left the victim partly paralyzed for weeks, occurred in Rutland. The dealer who sold the gun faces a potential suit as authorities pursue the case.

May 4 Ferrisburg reports a heated discussion over whether Vergennes should cover expenses tied to the death and burial of a man killed Tuesday in Vergennes. His body was dragged across the line into Ferrisburg, prompting cross-town dispute.
Chauncey Drown a Vermont Telephone Company lineman narrowly escaped death when his head touched a live power line near Dr. B. H. Bailey’s Graniteville home. He was stunned but held by a line, saved from a deadly fall. He recovered consciousness within fifteen minutes, with neck and head injuries and possible brain effects. Drown, a Littleton New Hampshire native, had worked for three to four years.
An Epworth League meeting at the Methodist church hosted a debate on equal suffrage for women. Each side presented prepared arguments with judges awarding the positive stance as the clear winner. A program of musical numbers followed, including piano duet and vocal performances.
Mrs Abbie L Ward died at the home of Mrs Ellen Ward in South Barre aged 94. Born December 10 1810 she came to Vermont from Massachusetts as a child and moved to South Barre from Windsor sixteen years ago. Her husband died about seventy years ago and she is survived by a sister Malvina Bagley of Hartland and several grandchildren in South Barre. Funeral services set for ten in the forenoon from the church with interment in the cemetery.
At the Modern Woodmen convention in Brattleboro Gilbert Phillipe of Aiseity was elected Chief Forester. The Barre drill team performed impressively, and delegates praised the display as among the finest seen, with Phillipe noted as drillmaster.
