Panic gripped passengers aboard the Mateu Maru as the Japanese steamer sank minutes after collision with the Indeposts off Hakodate. The crew acted bravely though unable to calm the passengers. The drowning toll includes the captain, 43 sailors, and most of the 244 passengers totaling around 260 dead.
Captain Griffis and five crew of the Baltimore schooner William H. Skinner tell of a sudden gale that sank the lumber laden ship off Georgetown on Feb 14. The hull opened, they scrambled to the starboard side, rode three hours as the ship righted, and were later rescued by the Bray Head. The Skinner, built in Baltimore in 1893, 222 tons, was abandoned at sea in latitude 41 64 N, long 71 20 W.
In Mount Hope Bay heavy winds capsized a sailboat. Manuel Soares, 26, of 18 Miller Street, drowned. Six foreign laborers survived, rescued by the O Neil brothers of Somerset in their launch. The accident occurred while seven men were afloat near Wall River.

A heart weakness and sinking spells threaten his survival while the governor’s family remains close. a three nurse staff plan is noted. The capital stock meeting in Stowe is recorded with seven survivors among clever children referenced in a separate item.
Rockland Maine reports the resignation of Hon Charles B Littlefield member of the House from Maine 2nd district. He cites age health and duty and says he resigns effective Sept 30 to allow the district to choose a successor. The announcement was made to Gov Cobb and Republican leader Fred W Wright.
Bath Maine March 23 Harold M Se wall of this city announced last night he is not a candidate for the Republican nomination against Congressman Littlefield. Sewall formerly United States minister to Hawaii and oversaw transfer of sovereignty to the United States in 1898. He also served as consul to Samoa and held a Maine Legislature seat.
Burlington March 25 Garry Cabana aged years and a resident of St Joseph's orphanage was seriously injured when a team driven by Eugene Gadue of Winooski struck him on the Winooski road opposite Aviloty. Cabana was returning from HW and joined a pass safely by. The team milled and Cabana was thrown to the road breaking a large bone in an arm and bruised about the body. The horse bolted and ran until stopped by Officer Collins. Ambulance summoned, Cabana taken to Mary Fletcher hospital with a fracture to the arm and internal injuries indicated. He has resided at the orphanage for three years. sister and brother live in the city. Gadue was arrested for intoxication.
